Every Toyota has its own weak spots. This is what we see most in our bays. Camry 2007–2011 · 2.4L • Oil consumption on the 2.4L four-cylinder • Water pump leaks on the V6 RAV4 2006–2008 · 2.4L • Oil consumption on the 2.4L • Steering shaft noise Tacoma 2005–2015 • Frame rust — inspect it • Leaf spring and suspension wear Tundra 2007–2011 • Secondary air injection pump failure — limp mode • Brake wear on heavy trucks 4Runner / Highlander V6 models • Water pump leaks • Suspension wear Prius 2010–2015 • EGR cooler clogging and head gasket failure • Brake actuator faults Keep it healthy What we tell Toyota owners • Keep up the factory schedule • Check oil level between changes on the 2.4L • Inspect truck frames every year • Replace the coolant on time Toyota questions we answer every week Straight answers from our techs Why is my Toyota burning oil? Some 2007–2011 Camrys and 2006–2008 RAV4s with the 2.4L engine burn oil because the piston rings stick and stop sealing. Warning signs Adding oil between changes · Low oil light · Blue smoke What we do We run an oil consumption test to measure it before recommending a repair. Don't just keep adding oil — it can damage the catalytic converter. Why is my Tundra in limp mode with a check engine light? On 2007–2011 Tundras and Sequoias, a failed secondary air injection pump or valve is a common cause of limp mode, often after moisture gets in. Warning signs Limp mode · Check engine light · Reduced power What we do Colorado Springs: Wet spring snow is when these pumps tend to quit. We diagnose the pump and valves and replace the part that failed. Should I worry about rust on my Tacoma frame? Toyota Tacoma frames have a history of rust. Road salt and de-icers make a yearly frame inspection worth doing. What to check Scaling or flaking · Holes near the rear · Soft spots What we do We inspect the frame and tell you plainly what we see. Why is my Prius running rough or overheating? On many 2010–2015 Priuses, a clogged EGR cooler can lead to misfires and, if ignored, head gasket failure. Warning signs Rough running · Misfire · Coolant loss · Overheating What we do We clean or replace the EGR system and inspect for head gasket damage. We do mechanical work on hybrids — not hybrid batteries or high-voltage repairs. Why is my Toyota V6 leaking coolant? Toyota's 3.5L V6 in the Camry, Highlander, RAV4 and others is known for water pump leaks as it ages. Warning signs Pink crust near the pump · Low coolant · Sweet smell What we do We pressure-test the system and replace the water pump — often with the drive belt. Not sure what's wrong with your Toyota? Tell us what it's doing when you book. We diagnose before we repair, and you approve the work before we start. • Classic Car Repair Colorado Springs | Westco Automotive

Classic car repair in Colorado Springs — carburetors, mechanical fuel pumps, points ignition and the quirks of older vehicles. Book a free inspection. Home / Classic Car Repair CLASSIC & VINTAGE CARS · COLORADO SPRINGS CLASSIC CAR REPAIR IN COLORADO SPRINGS Carburetors, ignition, brakes, cooling and wiring on classic cars, muscle cars and vintage trucks. The same care we give modern vehicles, applied to the ones built before computers ran everything. BOOK MY FREE CLASSIC INSPECTION CALL (719) 591-7743 ★ 4.9 stars · 247 Google reviews ✓ 24-month / 24,000-mile warranty ✓ ASE-certified technicians ✓ Female-led, family-owned What we do MECHANICAL WORK FOR CLASSICS Older vehicles need a tech who knows how they were built, not just a scan tool. 01 Fuel and ignition Carbureted engines and points or early electronic ignition need tuning by hand and by ear. ✓ Carburetor tune-up and rebuild ✓ Ignition points, distributors and timing ✓ Fuel system pumps, lines and tanks ✓ Hard starts and rough idle 02 Brakes and chassis Old brake and suspension systems deserve modern attention to safety. ✓ Drum and disc brakes serviced ✓ Brake lines and master cylinders ✓ Steering boxes and linkages ✓ Suspension bushings and joints 03 Cooling and electrical Heat and old wiring are the two things that sideline classics most often. ✓ Radiators and water pumps ✓ Overheating in traffic diagnosed ✓ Wiring and grounds repaired ✓ Charging systems generators and alternators UPGRADES & CONVERSIONS CLASSIC CAR UPGRADES WE INSTALL You can keep the look and the sound of a classic and still have it stop, steer and start like a modern car. These are the upgrades owners ask us for most. We do all of them in-house. BRAKES Should I convert my classic to disc brakes? If you drive it in traffic or in the mountains, yes. Front disc brakes stop shorter, fade less when they get hot, and recover faster after a wet road than the original drums. WHAT GOES INTO IT Front disc conversion: new spindles or brackets, rotors, calipers and hoses on the front axle, the most common upgrade we do. Power brake booster and master cylinder: a dual-circuit master cylinder so one leak doesn’t take out all your brakes, and a booster for a lighter pedal. Proportioning valve: balances front and rear braking so the rear drums don’t lock up first. WHAT WESTCO DOES We match the parts to your car and wheel size, bleed and test the system, and road test it before you pick it up. Colorado Springs: coming down Ute Pass or Gold Camp Road, drum brakes fade fast. Discs are the single biggest safety upgrade for a classic that gets driven. STEERING Can you add power steering to my classic? Yes. We convert manual steering to power steering, which makes parking and slow turns far easier without changing how the car looks. WHAT GOES INTO IT Power steering box or rack: a power gearbox or rack sized for your car. Pump, brackets and lines: a pump mounted to the engine with the right pulley and belt alignment. Quicker steering: many conversions also tighten up the loose, slow feel of an old manual box. WHAT WESTCO DOES We install the system, set the alignment as part of the job, and road test for straight tracking and return. FUEL SYSTEM Should I convert my carburetor to fuel injection? If you want easier cold starts, steadier idling and an engine that doesn’t care about altitude, fuel injection is the answer. WHAT TO KNOW Self-tuning at any altitude: fuel injection adjusts itself as you climb, where a carburetor jetted for one elevation runs rich or lean at another. Better cold starts: no more pumping the pedal on a cold morning. What it takes: an electronic throttle body or port system, a higher-pressure fuel pump, a return or regulated fuel line, and sensors. WHAT WESTCO DOES We install the system, set up the fuel supply, and tune it on the road here at altitude. IGNITION Is an electronic ignition conversion worth it? Yes. Replacing points with electronic ignition gives stronger spark, steadier timing and far less tune-up work. WHAT TO KNOW No more points: no gap to set and no points to burn. Stronger spark: better starting and a smoother idle, especially at altitude. WHAT WESTCO DOES We install electronic ignition, set the timing, and check the coil and wiring it depends on. COMFORT Can you add air conditioning to a car that never had it? Yes. We add A/C to classics that came without it, with a modern compressor, condenser and under-dash or in-dash controls. WHAT TO KNOW Cooling system first: A/C adds heat to the radiator, so we check that the cooling system can take it. Electrical capacity: the charging system has to support the added load. WHAT WESTCO DOES We install, charge and test the system, and make sure the engine still stays cool in traffic. DRIVETRAIN Should I swap in an overdrive transmission? If you drive your classic on the highway, an overdrive transmission drops engine speed at cruise, which means less noise, less wear and better mileage. WHAT TO KNOW Automatic or manual: we swap in modern overdrive automatics and manual transmissions. What changes: crossmember, driveshaft length, shifter and, on automatics, the controls. WHAT WESTCO DOES We handle the whole swap: mounts, driveshaft, linkage and wiring. COOLING Why does my classic overheat, and can you fix it for good? Old radiators clog, original fans can’t move enough air at low speed, and modern traffic keeps you at idle more than these cars were built for. WHAT WE DO Radiator upgrade: a higher-capacity radiator sized for your engine. Electric fans: strong airflow at idle and in traffic. The basics: thermostat, water pump, hoses and the right coolant mix. WHAT WESTCO DOES We find the real cause, then upgrade what needs it. ELECTRICAL Should I rewire my classic? If the wiring is original, probably. Old insulation cracks, connections corrode, and years of add-ons leave splices nobody can trace. Bad wiring is one of the most common causes of classic car fires. WHAT WE DO New wiring harness: a complete harness with modern fusing, laid in like the original. 6-volt to 12-volt conversion: for older cars still on 6 volts, a 12-volt system with the right charging, starter and bulbs. WHAT WESTCO DOES We rewire circuit by circuit, fuse everything properly, and test it all before it leaves. ENGINES Do you do engine swaps? Yes. We swap engines in classics, whether it’s a modern engine for reliability or a period-correct engine to replace a tired original. WHAT TO KNOW What goes into it: mounts, transmission adapters, cooling, fuel system, exhaust and wiring all have to be matched to the new engine. WHAT WESTCO DOES We plan the swap with you first so you know everything it touches before we start. CLASSICS AT ALTITUDE KEEPING A CLASSIC HAPPY AT 6,000 FEET Most classics were tuned at or near sea level. At Colorado Springs altitude, and on today’s fuel, they need a little help. CARBURETORS Why does my carbureted classic run rough at altitude? A carburetor jetted for sea level runs rich up here because the air is thinner. You get a rough idle, sooty plugs, poor mileage and a fuel smell. WHAT WESTCO DOES We re-jet and tune the carburetor for our altitude, or talk through fuel injection if you want it to handle any elevation on its own. FUEL & VAPOR LOCK Why does my classic stall when it’s hot? Often it’s vapor lock: fuel boiling in the line before it reaches the engine. Today’s ethanol-blend gas and our lower boiling point at altitude make it more likely. WHAT TO KNOW Ethanol and old fuel lines: ethanol-blend fuel can break down old rubber lines and seals. We replace them with ethanol-rated parts. Heat: fuel lines routed too close to the exhaust or engine. WHAT WESTCO DOES We reroute and insulate fuel lines, replace old rubber, and add an electric pump where it helps. Yes. We tune, adjust and rebuild carburetors on classic cars and trucks. Warning signs Hard start · Rough idle · Stumble on acceleration · Fuel smell What we do We check fuel delivery, ignition and vacuum first, then tune or rebuild the carburetor as needed. Colorado Springs: Altitude changes how a carburetor runs. A car tuned at sea level usually needs adjustment here. MY CLASSIC HAS BEEN SITTING FOR YEARS. CAN YOU GET IT RUNNING? Often, yes. Old fuel, stuck brakes, dried-out seals and weak ignition parts are the usual problems after long storage. What we usually find Varnished fuel · Stuck brakes · Dry-rotted hoses · Dead battery What we do We clean out the fuel system, check brakes, belts and hoses, and get it running safely before it goes on the road. Colorado Springs: Ethanol fuel is hard on old rubber fuel lines and carburetor parts. Check them if the car sits. WHY DOES MY CLASSIC OVERHEAT IN TRAFFIC? Older cooling systems have less margin. A tired radiator, weak fan or clutch, or wrong timing can push it over the edge at low speed. Warning signs Temp climbs at idle · Fine on the highway · Boiling over · Coolant smell What we do We pressure-test the cooling system, check airflow and timing, and fix the cause. CAN YOU FIX OLD WIRING? Yes. Brittle insulation, corroded connectors and bad grounds cause most electrical problems on classics. Warning signs Lights flicker · Gauges quit · Fuses blow · Charging problems What we do We trace the circuit, repair the damaged wiring and grounds, and test before it leaves. DO YOU DO BODYWORK ON CLASSICS? We focus on mechanical and electrical work, not traditional bodywork. What we cover Mechanical · Electrical · Brakes · Cooling What we do We keep your classic running and safe, and can point you to what it needs next. Colorado Springs: Summer traffic and mountain climbs are hard on old cooling systems. Get it checked before cruise season. GOT A CLASSIC THAT NEEDS SOME LOVE? Tell us about it when you book. Every generation has its own weak spots. This is what we see most in our bays. NPR diesel 2007–2012 • DPF clogging • EGR cooler failure • Turbo variable vanes sticking • NOx sensor failures NPR diesel 2013–2018 • DEF system crystallization • SCR catalyst failures • Fuel system contamination • Wiring harness chafing NPR diesel 2019–present • Aftertreatment sensor failures • Transmission temperature sensor faults NPR-HD diesel Heavy loads • Head gasket failures under heavy load • Exhaust manifold cracking • Charge air cooler leaks NPR gas GM V8 • Ignition coil failures • Oil pressure sensor issues • Transmission cooler line leaks • Exhaust manifold stud breakage Fleet trucks Box trucks · cab-overs • Priority scheduling • Tracked preventive maintenance • See our Fleet Service page Keep it healthy What we tell NPR owners • Don't cut regens short • Keep DEF clean and topped off • Service the Aisin fluid on schedule • Check brakes often — they work hard Isuzu NPR questions we answer every week Straight answers from our techs Why does my Isuzu NPR keep asking to regenerate? Frequent regen requests on an NPR diesel usually mean a DPF loaded with soot or ash, a failing sensor, or an EGR problem feeding it extra soot. Stop-and-go delivery routes make it worse. Warning signs Regen light on often · Reduced power · DPF warning · Poor fuel economy What we do We diagnose the sensors and the system, clean the DPF or run a service regen when appropriate, and repair what failed. We repair emissions systems — we don't delete them. Colorado Springs: Short in-town routes never get the DPF hot enough. If it keeps asking, let it finish or bring it in. Why is my NPR losing power? On NPR diesels, power loss is often a sticking turbo — carbon on the variable vanes — a boost leak, or the truck protecting itself in reduced power mode because of an emissions fault. Warning signs Loss of power · Slow acceleration · Black smoke · Reduced power mode What we do We test boost and the turbo vanes, check for charge air leaks, and scan the aftertreatment system to find the real cause. Why is there a DEF warning on my 2013–2018 NPR? On 2013–2018 NPRs, DEF warnings often come from crystallized DEF clogging the doser or lines, a failing sensor, or an SCR catalyst problem. Warning signs DEF warning light · Speed limit countdown · White crust around the doser What we do We inspect and clean the DEF system, test the sensors, and repair the part that failed. Colorado Springs: Winter cold is hard on DEF systems. Fix a DEF warning before the truck limits itself. Why is my NPR-HD losing coolant under load? On NPR-HD diesels worked hard, coolant loss can mean a head gasket failing under heavy load, a cracked exhaust manifold, or a charge air cooler leak. Warning signs Coolant loss · Overheating when loaded · White smoke · Oil or coolant contamination What we do We pressure-test the cooling system and test for combustion gases before recommending a repair. Why won't my NPR's cab tilt? NPR cabs tilt forward for engine access. When the tilt cylinder leaks or fails, the cab won't lift or won't hold. Common signs Cab won't tilt · Cab drops · Fluid leak at the cylinder What we do We repair or replace the cab tilt cylinder so engine access is safe again. How often should NPR brakes be checked? NPR brakes do severe-duty work — heavy loads and constant stops — so calipers and rotors wear faster than on a pickup. We check them at every service. Warning signs Grinding · Pulling to one side · Longer stopping · Brake warning light What we do We inspect calipers, rotors, pads and hardware, and use severe-duty parts built for the load. Not sure what's wrong with your NPR? Tell us what it's doing when you book. We diagnose before we repair, and you approve the work before we start. On many Ram HEMIs, a tick that's loudest on a cold start is a broken exhaust manifold bolt letting the manifold leak. Heat cycling snaps the bolts. A lifter problem can also tick, so it has to be diagnosed. Warning signs Tick on cold start · Exhaust smell · Tick fades as it warms up What we do We find the source, then extract the broken bolts and replace them properly — not just the ones that are easy to reach. Why won't my Ram's 4WD engage? On many Rams, 4WD that won't engage is a failed front axle actuator or transfer case encoder motor, not a failed transfer case. Warning signs 4WD light flashing · Won't shift into 4WD · Grinding when engaging What we do We scan the 4WD system, test the actuator and encoder motor, and service the transfer case while we're there. Colorado Springs: Find out before the first snow — not on the first snowy morning. Why is my 2009–2012 Ram 1500 having electrical problems? On 2009–2012 Ram 1500s, random electrical faults — no-starts, a fuel pump that won't run, horn or lights acting up — often trace to the TIPM (the main fuse and relay module). Common signs Intermittent no-start · Fuel pump not running · Horn or wipers acting up · Random warning lights What we do We test the circuits to confirm it's the TIPM before replacing anything, then program the replacement. Why does my Ram 1500 shudder at low speed? On 2013–2018 Ram 1500s with the 8-speed automatic, a shudder at low speeds is commonly the torque converter or transmission fluid condition. Common signs Shudder at 25–50 mph · Vibration like rumble strips · Harsh shifts What we do We scan the transmission, check the fluid, and service or repair the torque converter as needed. Why does my Ram clunk over bumps? Clunks over bumps on a Ram are usually worn ball joints, tie rods, control arm bushings or sway bar links — the front end carries a lot of weight. Warning signs Clunks over bumps · Wandering steering · Uneven tire wear · Vibration What we do We inspect every front-end joint and replace only what's worn, then align it. Why are the brake lines on my Ram rusting through? Road salt and de-icers corrode steel brake lines on older Rams until they leak — sometimes with little warning. Warning signs Soft brake pedal · Brake fluid leak · Brake warning light · Visible rust on lines What we do We inspect the lines, replace the corroded sections or full runs, and bleed the system. Wrangler JK 2007–2018 · JL 2018+ • Death wobble — front end wear • Pentastar oil cooler leak • Leaks and electrical faults Grand Cherokee 2011 and newer • Pentastar oil cooler housing leak • TIPM electrical faults, 2011–2013 • Air suspension on some models Cherokee 2014 and newer • 9-speed automatic shift complaints • Electrical faults Compass / Patriot 2007–2017 • CVT whine and overheating Gladiator 2020 and newer • Front end wear • Electrical updates Keep it healthy What we tell Jeep owners • Service axles and transfer case after off-road use • Fix front end wear early • Check under the engine for oil • Keep the battery healthy Jeep questions we answer every week Straight answers from our techs What is Jeep death wobble? Death wobble is a violent front-end shake after a bump at speed on solid-axle Jeeps like the Wrangler. It usually comes from a worn track bar, ball joints or tie rods — often after lifts or big tires. Warning signs Violent shake after bumps · Wandering steering · Clunks What we do We inspect every front-end joint under load and replace what's worn — not just a steering stabilizer. Colorado Springs: Colorado potholes and trail use wear Jeep front ends fast. Get a shake checked before it gets worse. Why is my Jeep leaking oil from the back of the engine? The 3.6L Pentastar in many Wranglers and Grand Cherokees is known for a leaking plastic oil cooler housing. Warning signs Oil smell · Oil leak at the rear of the engine What we do We confirm the source and replace the housing with the updated part. Why is my Grand Cherokee having electrical problems? On 2011–2013 Grand Cherokees, random electrical faults and no-starts often trace to the TIPM. Warning signs No-start · Fuel pump not running · Random warning lights What we do We test the circuits to confirm it's the TIPM before replacing anything. Why does my Jeep Cherokee shift badly? The 9-speed automatic in 2014-and-newer Cherokees can shift harshly or hesitate — often improved with software updates. Warning signs Harsh shifts · Hesitation · Gear hunting What we do We scan it, check for updates and fluid, and repair what's needed. Do I need to service my Jeep axles after off-roading? Water crossings and hard trail use can contaminate axle and transfer case fluid. Changing it protects the gears. Signs it's due Water crossings · Whine from axles · Milky fluid What we do We service the axles and transfer case with the correct fluids. Not sure what's wrong with your Jeep? Many GMC V8s use Active Fuel Management to shut off cylinders for fuel economy. The special lifters can fail — causing a tick, a misfire and camshaft damage if ignored. Warning signs Ticking · Misfire · Check engine light What we do We replace the failed lifters and can do the permanent fix: non-AFM hardware plus a PCM recalibration so the computer matches. Why is my Acadia showing a cam timing code? On 2007–2012 Acadias with the 3.6L V6, timing chain stretch triggers cam timing codes. Warning signs Check engine light · Cam timing codes · Rough running What we do We confirm chain stretch and replace the chains, guides and tensioners together. Why is my Terrain using oil? Many 2010–2013 Terrains with the 2.4L use oil because the piston rings stick. Warning signs Low oil between changes · Oil light What we do We run an oil consumption test before recommending a repair. Why won't my GMC shift into 4WD? 4WD that won't engage is often a failed transfer case encoder motor, not a failed transfer case. Warning signs 4WD light flashing · Service 4WD message What we do We test the encoder motor and actuator and service the transfer case. Colorado Springs: Find out before the first snow. Outback / Forester / Legacy 1999–2011 · 2.5L • Head gasket leaks • Timing belt service due • Wheel bearing noise Forester / Impreza 2011–2015 • Oil consumption on some engines • CV axle boots Outback / Legacy / Crosstrek CVT models • CVT judder • CVT fluid service overdue WRX Turbo models • Turbo and boost leaks • Clutch wear All Subarus AWD • Mismatched tires can damage the AWD system • Differential fluid overdue Keep it healthy What we tell Subaru owners • Replace all four tires together • Watch coolant on older 2.5L engines • Service the CVT fluid • Check wheel bearings at every service Subaru questions we answer every week Straight answers from our techs Why is my Subaru leaking oil or coolant from the engine? On many 1999–2011 Subarus with the 2.5L boxer, head gaskets are a well-known leak point — oil or coolant seeps externally, and some fail internally. Warning signs Oil or coolant leak · Overheating · Sweet smell · Coolant loss What we do We pressure-test the cooling system and inspect the gaskets before recommending the repair. Why is my Subaru burning oil? Some 2011–2015 Subaru engines use oil between changes, often from the piston rings. Warning signs Low oil between changes · Oil light · Blue smoke What we do We run an oil consumption test to measure it and recommend the right repair. Why does my Subaru CVT judder? A judder or shudder from a stop on a CVT Subaru can be fluid condition or internal wear. Warning signs Judder from a stop · Whine · Hesitation What we do We scan the CVT, check the fluid and for updates, and service or repair it. Why is my Subaru humming at highway speed? A hum that changes with speed on a Subaru is usually a wheel bearing — and Colorado's dirt roads and potholes wear them faster. Warning signs Hum or growl at speed · Changes when turning What we do Colorado Springs: Gravel roads and potholes are hard on Subaru bearings and axles. We find the bad bearing and replace it. Do all four tires really need to match on a Subaru? Yes. Subaru's all-wheel-drive system is sensitive to tire size differences; mismatched tread depth can strain the center differential. Why it matters AWD strain · Driveline noise · Tire wear What we do We check tread depth on all four and tell you whether one tire can be replaced or all four should. Range Rover 2003–2012 • Air suspension failures • Coolant leaks • Battery drain and electrical faults Range Rover Sport 2006–2013 • Air suspension failures • 5.0L supercharged timing chain wear, 2010–2013 • Coolant pipe leaks LR3 / LR4 2005–2016 • Air suspension compressor and springs • Coolant leaks • Rear differential noise Range Rover / Sport 2013 and newer • Supercharged V6 water pump and coolant leaks • Air suspension • Electrical faults Evoque / Discovery Sport 2012 and newer • Rear drive unit and PTU noise • Battery drain • Coolant leaks Keep it healthy What we tell Land Rover owners • Fix a suspension fault early • Check coolant level often • Keep the battery healthy • Service the transfer case Land Rover questions we answer every week Straight answers from our techs Why is my Land Rover showing a suspension fault? Land Rover air suspension fails as the air springs crack, the compressor wears out, or the valve block leaks — common on the Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, LR3 and LR4. Warning signs Suspension fault message · Sitting low · Leaning · Compressor running constantly What we do We diagnose the whole system and replace only the part that's failing. Fix it early — a leak burns out the compressor. Why is my Land Rover losing coolant? Land Rovers commonly leak coolant from plastic pipes and housings, and supercharged V6 engines from 2013 on are known for water pump leaks. Warning signs Low coolant warning · Sweet smell · Overheating · Coolant under the vehicle What we do We pressure-test the cooling system to find the exact source and replace the failed part. Why does my 5.0L supercharged Range Rover rattle on startup? On 2010–2013 5.0L supercharged V8s, a startup rattle is often worn timing chain tensioners and guides. Ignored, it can lead to engine damage. Warning signs Startup rattle · Cam timing codes · Rough idle What we do We confirm it with a scan and inspection and replace the timing components as one job. Why does my Land Rover battery keep dying? Land Rovers have many modules, and one that doesn't go to sleep can drain the battery overnight. A weak battery also triggers a cascade of warning messages. Warning signs Dead battery · Multiple warning lights · Random electrical faults What we do We test the battery and charging system and find the module causing the drain. Colorado Springs: Cold mornings expose a weak battery first — and Land Rovers are sensitive to low voltage. Why is my Evoque or Discovery Sport whining from underneath? On many Evoques and Discovery Sports, a whine or drone from underneath points to the rear drive unit or the power transfer unit (PTU). Common signs Whine at speed · Drone · Clunk on takeoff What we do We diagnose the driveline and service or repair the unit that's failing. Not sure what's wrong with your Land Rover? Every Cummins generation has its own weak spots. This is what we see most in our bays. 5.9L 12-valve 1989–1998 • Killer dowel pin check • Lift pump wear • Very durable mechanical injection 5.9L 24-valve 1998.5–2002 • VP44 injection pump failure • Weak lift pump starving the VP44 • Killer dowel pin check 5.9L common rail 2003–2007 • Injector wear — smoke and rough idle • Fuel supply and pressure faults • Front end wear from diesel weight 6.7L 2007.5–2012 • DPF and regen problems • EGR system faults • Turbo / VGT issues 6.7L 2013–2018 • DEF and NOx sensor faults • DPF and regen problems • Exhaust manifold bolt breakage 6.7L 2019–present • CP4 fuel pump concerns • DEF system faults • Front axle u-joint wear Keep it healthy What we tell Cummins owners • Change fuel filters on schedule • Drain the water separator • Check the lift pump on older trucks • Don't ignore a regen that never finishes Cummins questions we answer every week Straight answers from our techs Why won't my 24-valve 5.9L Cummins start? On 1998.5–2002 24-valve Cummins engines, a no-start or stall is often a failing VP44 injection pump — frequently after a weak lift pump has starved it of fuel. Warning signs Hard start or no start · Stalling · Loss of power · Pump codes What we do We test fuel supply pressure and the VP44, then replace what failed — including the lift pump if it caused it. What is the killer dowel pin on a 5.9L Cummins? On 1989–2002 5.9L Cummins engines, a small dowel pin in the timing case can back out and fall into the gear train. Most owners never know it's there until it causes damage. Why it matters Hidden until it fails · Can damage the timing gears · A simple preventive fix What we do We inspect it and install a tab kit to lock the pin in place — a small job that prevents a big one. Why is my 5.9L common-rail Cummins smoking and idling rough? On 2003–2007 common-rail 5.9L engines, smoke and a rough idle usually point to worn injectors or a fuel supply problem. Warning signs White or black smoke · Rough idle · Misfire · Hard starting · Poor fuel economy What we do We test fuel pressure and injector contribution to find the real cause before replacing parts. Should I worry about the CP4 pump on my 2019+ Cummins? Starting in 2019, the 6.7L Cummins moved to a CP4 high-pressure fuel pump. When a CP4 fails it can send metal through the fuel system, so fuel quality and filter changes matter. Warning signs Hard start · Loss of power · Stalling · Low rail pressure codes What we do We keep up fuel filter service and water separation, and diagnose any fuel-pressure fault before it spreads. Colorado Springs: If it stalls or loses power, stop driving it — running it can spread the damage. Why is my 6.7L Cummins regenerating all the time? On the 6.7L Cummins, frequent regens usually trace to a clogged DPF, a bad sensor, or EGR problems — often made worse by lots of short trips. Warning signs Frequent regens · DPF warning · Reduced power mode · Poor fuel economy What we do We diagnose the sensors and the system, run a service regen when appropriate, and repair what failed. We repair emissions systems — we don't delete them. Why is my 6.7L Cummins losing power when towing? Power loss on a 6.7L is often the turbo — a sticking VGT or actuator — or a boost leak. Exhaust restrictions from a clogged DPF can do it too. Warning signs Loss of power · Slow spool · Black smoke · Check engine light What we do We test boost and the VGT, then clean, repair or replace the turbo — or fix the leak or restriction behind it. Colorado Springs: Towing up long grades is when a sticking turbo shows up first. Not sure what's wrong with your Cummins? Tell us what it's doing when you book. Every Volvo has its own weak spots. This is what we see most in our bays. XC90 2003–present • AWD angle gear wear and leaks on first-generation models • 2016 recall for a coolant hose that could leak onto the exhaust • Sunroof drain clogs letting water into the cabin XC60 2010–present • Oil consumption on 2015–2016 5-cylinder and Drive-E 2.0 engines, which Volvo covered with an extended warranty for a time • AWD angle gear wear on earlier models • 2019–2020 recall for low-pressure fuel pump failure S60 / V60 2001–present • Oil consumption on 2013–2016 turbo engines • PCV oil trap clogging on 5-cylinder engines • Airbag inflator recalls on early S60s XC70 / V70 / S80 1999–2016 • Angle gear failure that quietly leaves the car in front-wheel drive • PCV oil trap clogging, which causes oil leaks at the seals • Timing belt due by age as well as mileage XC40 2019–present • Recall for brake-module software that could disable ABS and stability control • Seat belt retractor recall • Infotainment and electrical glitches owners commonly report Keep it healthy What we tell Volvo owners • Replace the timing belt on schedule, by age as well as miles • Check oil level between changes • Keep sunroof drains clear • Service the AWD angle gear fluid Volvo questions we answer every week Straight answers from our techs Why is my Volvo leaking oil or whistling at idle? On 5-cylinder Volvos, a clogged PCV oil trap builds crankcase pressure. That pressure can cause a whistle and push oil out of seals and gaskets. Warning signs Whistle at idle · Oil around seals · Dipstick pushing up What we do We test crankcase pressure, service the oil trap and breather hoses, and then reseal what leaked. Colorado Springs: short trips in cold weather build moisture in the breather system, so these traps clog faster here. Why is my Volvo burning oil? On 2013–2016 5-cylinder turbo engines and 2015–2016 Drive-E 2.0 engines, worn piston rings are a known cause, and Volvo covered it with an extended warranty for a time. On older 5-cylinders, a clogged PCV oil trap can push oil past the seals. Warning signs Low oil warning · Blue smoke · Oil leaks at seals What we do We run an oil consumption test, check the PCV system, and find out whether it's rings, breather or a leak before anything gets replaced. Is my Volvo's all-wheel drive still working? Not always. The angle gear, which sends power to the rear, can wear out quietly and leave the car driving on its front wheels only. Some failures whine or drone at 20–40 mph. Warning signs Whine at 20–40 mph · Wheelspin on snow · Clunk from the front What we do We check whether power is reaching the rear axle, inspect the angle gear and rear drive unit, and repair the failed part. Why is there water on my Volvo's floor? Clogged sunroof drain tubes are a common cause. Water that can't drain out runs into the cabin and can damage carpet and wiring. Can you work on my Volvo plug-in hybrid? We handle mechanical work on it: brakes, suspension, cooling, the gas engine and fluid service. We don't work on high-voltage batteries or high-voltage systems. Warning signs Mechanical work: yes · High-voltage: no What we do We handle the mechanical side with factory-level diagnostics and tell you up front if a concern is high-voltage.
