MAKE BY MAKE
WHAT SHOULD YOU KNOW ABOUT EACH AMERICAN MAKE?
Ford, Chevy, GMC, Ram and Jeep fill every lot in Colorado Springs, and every brand has specific years and engines to watch. This is what we tell our customers before they buy.
FORD
5.4L, EcoBoost and Coyote
• 5.4L 3-valve (2004–2010): cam phasers, timing chain tensioners and two-piece spark plugs that break
• 3.5L EcoBoost (2011–2016): timing chain stretch and intake carbon
• 5.0L Coyote: cam phaser rattle on some years, oil use on others
• Cold-start rattle means timing parts — negotiate hard
CHEVROLET & GMC
5.3L, 6.2L and 3.6L
• 5.3L and 6.2L with AFM or DFM: collapsed lifters and wiped cam lobes — starts as a tick
• 2010–2014 5.3L: oil consumption
• 3.6L V6 (2007–2011): timing chain stretch
• 8-speed automatic: torque converter shudder
RAM & DODGE
5.7L HEMI and 3.6L Pentastar
• 5.7L HEMI: broken exhaust manifold bolts — a tick that fades as it warms
• HEMI lifter and cam failure — a tick that does not fade
• 3.6L Pentastar (2011–2013): left-bank cylinder head failure
• Ram 1500: ball joints, tie rods and track bars wear fast
JEEP
Wrangler, Gladiator, Grand Cherokee
• Wrangler and Gladiator death wobble — worn steering and suspension parts, and it can be fixed
• 3.6L Pentastar: plastic oil filter housing warps and leaks
• WK2 Grand Cherokee: air suspension compressors and struts
• 5.7L HEMI: same lifter and manifold bolt issues as Ram
CADILLAC & BUICK
3.6L V6, AFM V8 and Magnetic Ride
• 3.6L V6: timing chain stretch shared with other GM V6s
• Escalade: same AFM V8 lifter risk as Silverado and Tahoe
• Magnetic Ride Control: a leaking shock is a real repair — check each corner
CHRYSLER & DODGE CARS
3.6L Pentastar and 5.7L HEMI
• Charger, Challenger and 300 share the Pentastar and HEMI with Ram and Jeep
• 3.6L: oil filter housing leaks and 2011–2013 cylinder heads
• 5.7L: listen for the HEMI tick on a cold start
DIESEL TRUCKS
Power Stroke, Duramax and Cummins
• Ford 6.0L and 6.7L, GM Duramax and Ram Cummins — each has its own known weak spots
• We repair emissions systems; we never delete them
• See our Diesel Repair page for the full rundown

CAR AND TRUCK QUESTIONS WE ANSWER EVERY WEEK
Straight answers from our techs
WHAT IS AN AFM OR DFM LIFTER FAILURE?
GM 5.3L and 6.2L V8s with Active or Dynamic Fuel Management shut off cylinders to save fuel. The lifters that do it can collapse and wipe the camshaft lobes. It starts as a tick and ends as a knock.
Warning signs
Tick at idle · Misfire codes · Check engine light · Oil a quart low
What we do
We confirm it before anything comes apart. Then we repair the lifters, or do the permanent fix — converting the hardware and reprogramming the computer to match.
Colorado Springs: Towing up the pass on a ticking engine is how a lifter repair becomes an engine replacement. Get it checked early.
HOW OFTEN DO BRAKES NEED REPLACING?
It depends on the vehicle and how it is driven. Heavy trucks, towing and mountain grades wear brakes faster, so we measure the pads and check the rotors at every visit and tell you what is left.
Warning signs
Squealing · Grinding · Wheel shake when braking · Brake warning light
What we do
We inspect pads, rotors, calipers, hardware and fluid, and use OEM or high-quality equivalent parts. Brake fluid should be flushed about every two years.
Colorado Springs: Coming down Ute Pass or Monument Hill? Use a lower gear and let the engine help save your brakes.
WHY IS MY HEMI TICKING?
The 5.7L HEMI in Ram, Jeep, Dodge and Chrysler has two common ticks. Broken exhaust manifold bolts tick loudest on a cold start and fade as it warms. A failing lifter and camshaft — the “HEMI tick” — does not fade.
Warning signs
Tick on cold start · Tick that stays warm · Exhaust smell · Misfire codes
What we do
We listen cold and warm, check the manifolds and scan for misfires, so you know which one you have before any money is spent.
WHY DOES MY ENGINE RATTLE ON A COLD START?
A rattle for the first few seconds after a cold start usually points to timing parts — cam phasers and tensioners on the Ford 5.4L 3-valve, timing chain stretch on the 3.5L EcoBoost and GM 3.6L V6.
Warning signs
Rattle on startup · Cam correlation codes · Check engine light · Rough idle
What we do
We check oil level and condition first, then find the exact source before replacing anything.
WHY DOES MY TRUCK SHUDDER AT A STEADY SPEED?
On many GM trucks and SUVs with the 8-speed automatic, a shudder that feels like driving over rumble strips at steady speed usually comes from the torque converter.
WARNING SIGNS
Rumble-strip feel · Shudder at 30–50 mph · Harsh shifts · Transmission light
What we do
We road-test it, scan the transmission and check the fluid, then tell you whether it is a fluid service or a converter repair.
Colorado Springs: Towing a trailer up I-25? A transmission that shudders empty will shudder worse loaded.
WHAT IS JEEP DEATH WOBBLE?
Death wobble is a violent shake in the front end of a Wrangler or Gladiator after hitting a bump at speed. It traces to worn steering and suspension parts, and it can be fixed — but it is not a five-minute job.
COMMON CAUSES
Track bar · Ball joints · Tie rod ends · Steering stabilizer · Worn bushings
What we do
We check every joint in the front end on a lift and fix the worn parts, not just the stabilizer that hides the symptom.
WHY WON’T MY FORD SPARK PLUGS COME OUT?
The 2004–2008 Ford 5.4L 3-valve uses a two-piece spark plug that often breaks during removal, leaving part of the plug in the head.
Warning signs
Original plugs at high miles · Misfire · Rough idle · Broken plug from another shop
What we do
We use the proper extraction procedure and tools to remove broken plugs without pulling the head.
WHAT SHOULD I CHECK BEFORE BUYING A USED TRUCK?
Get a pre-purchase inspection. Every brand has specific years and engines with expensive repair traps, and a seller who refuses an inspection is hiding something.
WHAT WE CHECK
Cold-start tick or rattle · Front-end play · Transfer case fluid · Service history
What we do
We put it on a lift, scan every module for codes and photograph everything we find — so you know exactly what you are buying before you commit.
WHY IS MY TRUCK BURNING OIL?
The 2010–2014 GM 5.3L with Active Fuel Management is known for it, and some Ford 5.0L Coyote engines use oil too. Piston rings that stick with carbon and stop sealing are a common cause.
Warning signs
Adding oil every 500–1,000 miles · Low oil warning · Exhaust smoke · Power dropping off
What we do
An oil consumption test measures how fast it's using oil. The fix ranges from an engine cleaning procedure to ring replacement. Don't just keep adding oil — it can ruin the catalytic converter.
