BMW QUESTIONS WE ANSWER EVERY WEEK
Straight answers from our techs
WHAT IS A VANOS FAULT?
VANOS is BMW’s variable cam timing. When a solenoid or cam adjuster fails, you can lose power, idle rough or hear a rattle on startup.
Warning signs
Reduced power · Rough idle · Check engine light · Rattle on startup
What we do
We read the BMW-specific codes and test the solenoids, then replace the solenoid or the cam adjuster unit as needed.
Colorado Springs: Mountain climbs and summer heat are hard on BMW cooling systems. A low coolant message is worth a check before a trip.
WHY DOES MY BMW WHINE AROUND 4,000 RPM?
On the N20 and N26, a whine near 4,000 RPM or a rattle on a cold start can point to failing timing chain guides. It should be checked early.
Warning signs
Whine at 4,000 RPM · Cold-start rattle · Check engine light
What we do
We confirm the cause before anything comes apart, then replace the timing chain module if the guides are failing.
Colorado Springs: A whine that shows up climbing Monument Hill in a lower gear is worth a listen before the guides fail.
WHY DOES MY BMW SMELL LIKE BURNING OIL?
Oil leaking from the valve cover or oil filter housing gasket drips onto hot exhaust parts. It is one of the most common BMW repairs.
Warning signs
Burning oil smell · Oil spots · Low oil warning · Smoke from the engine bay
What we do
We find the exact leak and replace the failed gaskets, then clean up and check for leaks after.
WHAT IS WALNUT BLASTING?
Direct-injection engines build up carbon on the intake valves because fuel never washes over them. Walnut blasting cleans it off.
Warning signs
Rough idle · Hesitation · Misfires · Lower fuel economy
What we do
We clean the intake valves with crushed walnut shell media, usually recommended every 60,000–80,000 miles on direct-injection BMWs.
WHY IS MY BMW OVERHEATING?
BMW cooling systems use plastic parts that age and crack, and many use an electric water pump that can fail without warning.
Warning signs
Temperature warning · Coolant smell · Low coolant message · Leaks under the front
What we do
We pressure-test the system and replace the failed parts, from the water pump to the expansion tank and hoses.
Colorado Springs: Towing or climbing on a weak cooling system can turn a hose into a head gasket. Pull over if the gauge climbs.
