On 2004–2010 5.4L 3-valve Tritons, a rattle or ticking for a few seconds after a cold start is the classic sign of worn cam phasers and timing chain components. Ignored, it can lead to engine damage. Warning signs Cold-start rattle · Ticking at idle · Rough idle · Cam timing codes What we do We confirm it with a scan and inspection, then replace the phasers, chains, guides and tensioners as one job. Colorado Springs: Cold mornings make the rattle louder and more frequent. Don't wait for it to run all day. Why do Ford spark plugs break when they're changed? Ford 5.4L and 4.6L 3-valve engines used a two-piece spark plug that's known to break off in the head during removal. Why it matters Plug snaps during removal · Part left in the head What we do We use the right procedure and extraction tools to remove broken plugs without pulling the cylinder heads. Should I choose a Ford EcoBoost or the 5.0L V8? Both can last. The EcoBoost needs attention to timing chains, cam phasers and carbon buildup; the 5.0L V8 is simpler, with oil consumption on some engines. Maintenance matters more than the badge. What to watch EcoBoost: timing chain and phasers · EcoBoost: carbon buildup · 5.0L: oil consumption What we do We inspect either engine and tell you what it needs — and what it doesn't. Why does my F-150's 10-speed shift hard? On 2017-and-newer F-150s with the 10R80, harsh or clunky shifts can be adaptive learning, a software update, fluid condition, or internal wear such as the CDF drum bushing. Warning signs Harsh shifts · Clunk into gear · Shift flare · Transmission warning What we do We scan it, check for software updates and fluid condition, and find out whether it needs a relearn or a repair. Why does my F-150 grind when I'm not in 4WD? On many F-150s, a grinding noise from the front wheels in 2WD is the IWE hub system — a vacuum leak lets the hubs partly engage. Warning signs Grinding from the front · Noise in 2WD · 4WD slow to engage What we do We test the IWE vacuum system and replace the failed hub, solenoid or line. Do you work on Ford diesel trucks too? Yes — every Power Stroke from the 7.3L to the 6.7L. Our Power Stroke page covers each generation's common problems. Diesel work 7.3L · 6.0L · 6.4L · 6.7L What we do See our Power Stroke Repair page, or book a free inspection and we'll take a look. Not sure what's wrong with your Ford? GM 5.3L and 6.2L V8s with Active or Dynamic Fuel Management shut off cylinders to save fuel. The lifters that do it can collapse and wipe the camshaft lobes. It starts as a tick and ends as a knock. Warning signs Tick at idle · Misfire codes · Check engine light · Oil a quart low What we do We confirm it before anything comes apart. Then we repair the lifters, or do the permanent fix — converting the hardware and reprogramming the computer to match. Colorado Springs: Towing up the pass on a ticking engine is how a lifter repair becomes an engine replacement. Get it checked early. HOW OFTEN DO BRAKES NEED REPLACING? It depends on the vehicle and how it is driven. Heavy trucks, towing and mountain grades wear brakes faster, so we measure the pads and check the rotors at every visit and tell you what is left. Warning signs Squealing · Grinding · Wheel shake when braking · Brake warning light What we do We inspect pads, rotors, calipers, hardware and fluid, and use OEM or high-quality equivalent parts. Brake fluid should be flushed about every two years. Colorado Springs: Coming down Ute Pass or Monument Hill? Use a lower gear and let the engine help save your brakes. WHY IS MY HEMI TICKING? The 5.7L HEMI in Ram, Jeep, Dodge and Chrysler has two common ticks. Broken exhaust manifold bolts tick loudest on a cold start and fade as it warms. A failing lifter and camshaft — the “HEMI tick” — does not fade. Warning signs Tick on cold start · Tick that stays warm · Exhaust smell · Misfire codes What we do We listen cold and warm, check the manifolds and scan for misfires, so you know which one you have before any money is spent. WHY DOES MY ENGINE RATTLE ON A COLD START? A rattle for the first few seconds after a cold start usually points to timing parts — cam phasers and tensioners on the Ford 5.4L 3-valve, timing chain stretch on the 3.5L EcoBoost and GM 3.6L V6. Warning signs Rattle on startup · Cam correlation codes · Check engine light · Rough idle What we do We check oil level and condition first, then find the exact source before replacing anything. WHY DOES MY TRUCK SHUDDER AT A STEADY SPEED? On many GM trucks and SUVs with the 8-speed automatic, a shudder that feels like driving over rumble strips at steady speed usually comes from the torque converter. WARNING SIGNS Rumble-strip feel · Shudder at 30–50 mph · Harsh shifts · Transmission light What we do We road-test it, scan the transmission and check the fluid, then tell you whether it is a fluid service or a converter repair. Colorado Springs: Towing a trailer up I-25? A transmission that shudders empty will shudder worse loaded. WHAT IS JEEP DEATH WOBBLE? Death wobble is a violent shake in the front end of a Wrangler or Gladiator after hitting a bump at speed. It traces to worn steering and suspension parts, and it can be fixed — but it is not a five-minute job. COMMON CAUSES Track bar · Ball joints · Tie rod ends · Steering stabilizer · Worn bushings What we do We check every joint in the front end on a lift and fix the worn parts, not just the stabilizer that hides the symptom. WHY WON’T MY FORD SPARK PLUGS COME OUT? The 2004–2008 Ford 5.4L 3-valve uses a two-piece spark plug that often breaks during removal, leaving part of the plug in the head. Warning signs Original plugs at high miles · Misfire · Rough idle · Broken plug from another shop What we do We use the proper extraction procedure and tools to remove broken plugs without pulling the head. WHAT SHOULD I CHECK BEFORE BUYING A USED TRUCK? Get a pre-purchase inspection. Every brand has specific years and engines with expensive repair traps, and a seller who refuses an inspection is hiding something. WHAT WE CHECK Cold-start tick or rattle · Front-end play · Transfer case fluid · Service history What we do We put it on a lift, scan every module for codes and photograph everything we find — so you know exactly what you are buying before you commit. WHY IS MY TRUCK BURNING OIL? The 2010–2014 GM 5.3L with Active Fuel Management is known for it, and some Ford 5.0L Coyote engines use oil too. Piston rings that stick with carbon and stop sealing are a common cause. Warning signs Adding oil every 500–1,000 miles · Low oil warning · Exhaust smoke · Power dropping off What we do An oil consumption test measures how fast it's using oil. The fix ranges from an engine cleaning procedure to ring replacement. Don't just keep adding oil — it can ruin the catalytic converter. NOT SURE WHAT’S WRONG WITH YOUR CAR OR TRUCK? Fiat's MultiAir engines use an oil-driven actuator (often called the brick) to control the intake valves. When it fails, the engine misfires or runs rough — and dirty or wrong oil makes it worse. Warning signs Misfire · Rough idle · Check engine light · Loss of power What we do We confirm it with a scan and test, then replace the MultiAir actuator. What oil does a Fiat MultiAir engine need? MultiAir engines are sensitive to oil quality because the oil runs the valve actuator. Using the specified oil and changing it on time protects that system. Why it matters Protects the MultiAir unit · Prevents misfires What we do We use the oil Fiat specifies and reset the service reminder. Why does my Fiat 500L hesitate from a stop? Early 500L models with the dual-clutch transmission are known for hesitation and jerky low-speed shifts. Warning signs Hesitation from a stop · Jerky shifts · Transmission warning What we do We scan the transmission, check for software updates, and diagnose the clutch system. Why does my Fiat 500X shift harshly? The 9-speed automatic in the 500X can shift harshly or hunt for gears — often improved with software updates and fluid service. Warning signs Harsh shifts · Gear hunting · Delayed engagement What we do We scan it, check for updates and fluid condition, and repair what's needed. Why is my Fiat clutch slipping? A clutch that slips, smells hot or engages high in the pedal is worn — common on manual 500s and Abarths. Warning signs Revs rise without speed · Burning smell · High engagement point What we do We inspect the clutch and replace the clutch, pressure plate and release bearing together. The 3.7L V6 in 2007–2015 CX-9s has an internal water pump driven by the timing chain. When it fails, coolant can leak into the oil and destroy the engine. Warning signs Coolant loss with no visible leak · Milky oil · Overheating What we do We test for internal leakage and, when needed, replace the water pump with the timing chain components. Colorado Springs: If your CX-9 is losing coolant with no puddle, stop and have it checked. Why is my CX-7 turbo failing? The 2.3L turbo in the CX-7 is known for turbo failures and timing chain wear, often made worse by long oil change intervals. Warning signs Loss of power · Blue smoke · Whistling · Check engine light What we do We diagnose the turbo and timing system and repair what's failing. Why won't my RX-8 start? RX-8 rotary engines can flood if shut off cold, and low compression from worn apex seals makes them hard to start. Warning signs Won't start warm or cold · Rough idle · Loss of power What we do We test compression and the ignition system to find the cause. Why does my Mazda vibrate at idle? A vibration at idle or a clunk on takeoff is often worn motor mounts on older Mazda3s and Mazda6s. Warning signs Vibration at idle · Clunk on takeoff What we do We inspect the mounts and replace the worn ones. Are newer SkyActiv Mazdas reliable? Generally yes. SkyActiv engines from 2013 on are durable when oil changes are kept up. What to watch Oil change intervals · Brake wear · Tire wear What we do We follow Mazda's maintenance schedule and inspect everything at each visit. Not sure what's wrong with your Mazda? A HEMI tick is often a broken exhaust manifold bolt — or a lifter problem, which is more serious. It has to be diagnosed. Warning signs Tick on cold start · Tick that doesn't go away · Misfire What we do We find the source and repair it — bolts or lifters. Why is my Pentastar V6 leaking oil? The 3.6L Pentastar in many Dodges is known for a leaking plastic oil cooler housing in the valley of the engine. Warning signs Oil smell · Oil leak at the back of the engine · Coolant mixing in some cases What we do We confirm the source and replace the housing with the updated part. Why is my Grand Caravan having electrical problems? Random electrical faults on 2008–2014 Grand Caravans often trace to the TIPM (the main fuse and relay module). Warning signs No-start · Horn or wipers acting up · Random warning lights What we do We test the circuits to confirm it's the TIPM before replacing anything. Why does my Pentastar tick? Some Pentastar V6s develop a tick from worn rocker arms, often with a misfire code. Warning signs Ticking · Misfire code What we do We confirm it and replace the rocker arms and lash adjusters. On Audi, BMW, VW and Mercedes, most coolant leaks come from plastic cooling parts — the water pump housing, thermostat housing and coolant pipes — that go brittle and crack after years of heat cycling. On some Audi 3.0T supercharged engines the intercooler cores leak too. Warning signs Low coolant light · Sweet smell after a drive · Pink or purple puddles · Running hotter than normal What we do We pressure-test the cooling system to find the exact leak, then fix the source — not just top it off. Colorado Springs: Freezing nights and warm afternoons are hard on plastic cooling parts. Don't drive a European car that's losing coolant — overheating can warp the head. HOW OFTEN DO EUROPEAN BRAKES NEED REPLACING? It depends on the car and how it is driven. Most European cars use brake pad wear sensors, and many makers call for replacing rotors along with pads rather than resurfacing them. Warning signs Squealing · Grinding · Wheel shake when braking · Brake warning light What we do We inspect pads, rotors, calipers, hardware, wear sensors and fluid, and use OEM or high-quality equivalent parts. Brake fluid should be flushed about every two years. Colorado Springs: Mountain grades and stop-and-go traffic wear brakes faster — especially on heavier all-wheel-drive models. WHY IS MY AIR SUSPENSION NOT WORKING? Air suspension fails as the struts, compressor and valve block wear — common on the Audi Q7, A6 Allroad and A8, Mercedes Airmatic (E-, S- and GL-Class), and the Jaguar XJ and F-Pace. A leaking strut drops a corner, and a weak compressor can’t keep up. Warning signs One corner low overnight · Sitting uneven · Suspension light · Compressor always running What we do We pressure-test the system and scan the leveling sensors, then replace only the part that's failing. Fix it early — a leaking strut burns out the compressor too. WHY DOES MY EUROPEAN CAR RATTLE ON A COLD START? A rattle for the first few seconds after a cold start usually points to the timing chain tensioner — a known issue on 2009–2012 Audi and VW 2.0T, MINI N14 and N18, early Mercedes M276 and M278, and Jaguar V6 and V8 engines. Warning signs Rattle for a few seconds on startup · Cam correlation codes · Check engine light · Long cranking What we do We tell you whether your engine has the original or updated parts. If it needs it, we replace the chain, tensioner and guides as one job. HOW OFTEN DOES A EUROPEAN AUTOMATIC NEED SERVICE? Audi and VW S tronic (DSG) transmissions need fluid and filter service about every 35,000–45,000 miles, and Volvo’s 3.2L automatic about every 60,000. Skipping it is a common cause of rough shifting and expensive transmission repairs. Signs it's overdue Rough or delayed shifts · Hesitation · Jerking at low speed · Transmission light What we do Brand-specific fluid and filters, then the adaptation and reset procedures so it shifts smoothly. Colorado Springs: Mostly town driving? Service toward the early end of the range. WHY DOES MY EUROPEAN CAR VIBRATE AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS? Highway vibration on a European car is usually worn control arm bushings, wheel balance, a bent wheel or alignment. If it shakes mainly when braking, it's the rotors. It typically shows up between 55 and 70 mph. Common causes Control arm bushings · Wheel balance · Bent wheel · Alignment · Ball joints or tie rods What we do We check steering, suspension, wheels, tires and brakes to find the real cause, so you don't pay for parts that won't fix it. WHAT IS CARBON CLEANING (WALNUT BLASTING)? Walnut blasting removes hard carbon from the intake valves of direct-injection engines like the Audi and VW 2.0T and 3.0T, BMW N54 and N55, and MINI N14 and N18. Fuel never washes those valves, so oil vapor bakes on until it restricts airflow. Warning signs Rough idle · Cold-start misfires · Lost power · Worse fuel economy What we do Many direct-injection engines show symptoms between 60,000 and 100,000 miles. We inspect first and clean only when carbon is actually affecting how it runs. Fuel additives can't reach these valves. WHAT SHOULD I CHECK BEFORE BUYING A USED EUROPEAN CAR? Get a pre-purchase inspection. Every European brand has specific years and engines with expensive repair traps, and a seller who refuses an inspection is hiding something. WHAT WE CHECK Codes in every module · Cold-start noise · Oil and coolant leaks · Service history What we do We put it on a lift, scan every module for codes and photograph everything we find — so you know exactly what you are buying before you commit. WHY IS MY EUROPEAN CAR BURNING OIL? Some engines are known for it — late-2000s to mid-2010s Audi 2.0T, Volvo Drive-E four-cylinders and Jaguar’s Ingenium 2.0T among them. Piston rings that wear or stick with carbon and stop sealing are a common cause. NOT SURE WHAT’S WRONG WITH YOUR EUROPEAN CAR? Every diesel family has its known weak spots. Whether your truck has one of them takes a real inspection — these are patterns, not a diagnosis. FORD 6.0L Power Stroke, 2003–2007 • The oil cooler clogs first and starves the EGR cooler • A cracked EGR cooler leaks coolant — often with no puddle • Pressure can then push the head gaskets • We fix the whole chain and use head studs when the heads come off FORD 6.7L & 6.4L Power Stroke, 2008 and newer • 6.7L: CP4-style high-pressure fuel pump — clean fuel and filters are the best protection • 6.4L: radiator leaks, fuel dilution and expensive repairs • We tell you honestly what we find FORD 7.3L Power Stroke, 1994–2003 • Usually a durable engine • Camshaft position sensor — sudden no-start or misfire • Harness under the valve covers — intermittent misfire GM LB7 & LLY Duramax, 2001–2005 • LB7: injectors under the valve covers — hard hot starts, smoke at idle, fuel in the oil • A return-fuel test can find a leaking injector before anything comes apart • LLY: runs hot under load, especially towing GM LML Duramax, 2011–2016 • CP4-style high-pressure fuel pump • Water, air or low supply pressure can wear it • A failed pump can send metal through injectors, rails and lines RAM 6.7L CUMMINS Cummins, 2007.5 and newer • Intake grid heater bolt can loosen and drop into the engine • Checking and securing it is a quick job at routine service • Some Ram diesels also use the CP4-style pump RAM 5.9L CUMMINS Cummins, 1989–2007 • 24-valve (1998–2002): VP44 injection pump — heat and low supply pressure are hard on it • 12-valve: the timing cover dowel pin can back out • A healthy lift pump and good fuel pressure help it last Keep it healthy What we tell diesel owners • Change fuel filters and drain the water separator • Never ignore the water-in-fuel light • Let the turbo cool after hard towing • Get it on the highway so it can regenerate GM LBZ & LMM Duramax, 2006–2010 • LBZ: widely regarded as one of the toughest Duramax engines, and it has no DPF • LMM (2007.5+): the first Duramax with a DPF, so short trips load the DPF and EGR with soot • Both use the CP3 pump, not the CP4 • We check regen history, EGR flow and injector balance rates GM L5P Duramax, 2017 and newer • Uses a Denso fuel pump instead of the Bosch CP4 • Most trouble is on the emissions side: DEF quality, DEF heater and NOx sensor faults • SCR and DEF codes can start a derate countdown, so don’t ignore the warning • Factory-level diagnostics and module programming in-house MERCEDES SPRINTER Diesel vans and fleets • Oil leaks around the oil cooler on the 3.0L V6 are a common complaint • NOx sensor, DEF and EGR faults that put the van in limp mode • Glow plug failures show up on cold Colorado mornings • Factory-level module programming in-house DIESEL QUESTIONS WE ANSWER EVERY WEEK Straight answers from our techs WHAT DIESELS DO YOU WORK ON? Ford Power Stroke 7.3L, 6.0L, 6.4L and 6.7L; GM Duramax LB7, LLY, LBZ, LMM, LML and L5P; Ram Cummins 5.9L and 6.7L; Isuzu NPR gas and diesel; Mercedes Sprinter vans; and diesel motorhomes and fleet trucks. Colorado Springs: Altitude, long grades and cold mornings add their own load. We service diesels with that in mind. HOW DOES WESTCO DIAGNOSE A DIESEL? We start with factory-level scan tools for Ford, GM and Cummins, then test before we replace anything: fuel pressure, injector balance, compression, crankcase pressure and cooling system pressure, depending on the complaint. WE TEST Fuel pressure · Injector balance · Crankcase pressure · Cooling system What we do You see what we found — photos and data — and you approve the work before we start. Colorado Springs: Not sure what is wrong? Describe it when you book. We diagnose before we repair. DO YOU DELETE EMISSIONS EQUIPMENT? No. Westco does not remove or disable EGR, DPF, DEF/SCR or catalyst systems. We diagnose why they are failing and repair them. COMMON ROOT CAUSES Injectors · Sensors · Short-trip driving · Missed regenerations What we do Shopping a truck that has already been deleted? We tell you what we see and what it can mean for registration, emissions testing and resale. We’re not lawyers, so confirm the legal side with the state. DO YOU WORK ON FLEETS AND DO DOT INSPECTIONS? Yes. We maintain diesel pickups, vans, box trucks and Isuzu NPRs for local businesses, and we perform DOT annual inspections in-house. FLEET WORK Scheduled maintenance · DOT annual inspections · Box trucks and NPRs · Work vans What we do See our Fleet Service page for how we keep work trucks on the road. CAN YOU HANDLE MY EXTENDED WARRANTY CLAIM? Yes. We take down what the truck is doing, verify coverage with your provider by VIN and name, diagnose it, submit the claim, then go over the approval with you before any repair starts. HOW IT WORKS Your complaint · Coverage check · Diagnosis and claim · Approval, then repair What we do You know what is covered and what is not before we pick up a wrench. Colorado Springs: Bring your warranty paperwork or contract number when you book. CAN YOU INSPECT A USED DIESEL BEFORE I BUY IT? Yes. Our pre-purchase diesel inspection can include a relative compression test, injector balance test, fuel supply pressure test, crankcase pressure check, DPF soot load and regeneration history, and a turbo shaft play check. WE ALSO CHECK Grid heater bolt on 6.7L Cummins · Cooling system pressure · Codes in every module · Turbo shaft play · Service history What we do You get photos and test results, so you know exactly what you are buying before you commit. WHAT IS THE CP4 FUEL PUMP PROBLEM? The Ford 6.7L, GM LML Duramax and some Ram diesels use a CP4-style high-pressure fuel pump that is lubricated by the fuel itself. Water, air or low supply pressure can wear it, and a bad failure can send metal through the injectors, rails and lines. BEST PROTECTION Clean fuel · Filters on schedule · Healthy supply pressure · Drain the water separator What we do We can talk through prevention options for your truck at your next service. WHY IS MY 6.0L POWER STROKE LOSING COOLANT? On many 6.0L trucks the oil cooler clogs first. That starves the EGR cooler of coolant flow, the EGR cooler can crack and leak coolant, and a pressurized cooling system can eventually push head gaskets. WARNING SIGNS Coolant loss, no puddle · White smoke · Residue at the degas cap · Rising oil temps What we do We fix the chain from the start — oil cooler, EGR cooler, coolant — and use head studs when the heads come off. HOW CAN I MAKE MY DIESEL LAST LONGER? Let it idle a minute or two before driving, especially when cold. After hard towing, let the turbo cool before shutting down. Change fuel filters on schedule and never ignore the water-in-fuel light. ALSO Highway runs to regenerate · Don’t run the tank low · Quality filters · Drain the separator WHAT WE DO We set a service schedule that fits how you actually use the truck — daily driving, towing or fleet work. NOT SURE WHAT’S WRONG WITH YOUR DIESEL? Tell us what it's doing when you book. We diagnose before we repair, and you approve the work before we start. A DOT inspection is the annual federal periodic inspection required for commercial motor vehicles under 49 CFR 396.17. We do these in-house on all types of trucks. We don't inspect semi trailers. THE BASICS What is a DOT annual inspection? It's a once-a-year safety inspection of a commercial vehicle against the federal minimum standards in Appendix A to 49 CFR Part 396. HOW IT WORKS The rule: 49 CFR 396.17 says every commercial motor vehicle a motor carrier controls must pass a periodic inspection of every component in Appendix A at least once every 12 months. Who can do it: the carrier can inspect its own vehicles, or use a commercial garage like ours. Either way, the inspector has to meet the qualifications in 49 CFR 396.19. Appendix A vs. Appendix G: older paperwork and many websites still call the standard 'Appendix G.' FMCSA moved it to Appendix A to Part 396 in 2021. It's the same standard under a new name. WHAT WESTCO DOES We inspect every Appendix A item that applies to your vehicle, write up the results, and give you the report and decal for your records. FLEET SERVICE → WHO NEEDS IT Does my truck count as a commercial motor vehicle? Under federal rules, probably, if it runs in interstate commerce and has a GVWR or GCWR of 10,001 lb or more. Colorado's line for intrastate-only work may be different, so check your own situation. THE THRESHOLDS Federal definition (49 CFR 390.5): a vehicle used on a highway in interstate commerce to carry passengers or property is a CMV if its GVWR, GCWR, gross vehicle weight or gross combination weight is 10,001 lb or more. Certain passenger and hazmat vehicles also count. Trailers count toward the combination: a pickup pulling a trailer can go over 10,001 lb GCWR even when the truck alone doesn't. Colorado intrastate: Colorado has its own motor carrier rules for intrastate-only work, with their own thresholds and exceptions. Confirm your status with Colorado State Patrol Motor Carrier Safety. WHAT WESTCO DOES We can inspect your truck whether you're required to or just want the peace of mind. Your regulatory status is between you and the State Patrol or FMCSA. Colorado Springs: lots of local contractors run a 1-ton pickup with a gooseneck or equipment trailer. Add up the truck's GVWR and the trailer's rating before you assume you're exempt. PAPERWORK What paperwork do I get, and how long do I keep it? You get a written inspection report and a decal. Federal rules say to keep the report for 14 months from the inspection date. WHAT THE RULES SAY The report (49 CFR 396.21): it names the inspector and the motor carrier, gives the date, identifies the vehicle, lists the components inspected and the results, and certifies the inspection. Retention: keep the original or a copy for 14 months from the inspection date, where the vehicle is housed or maintained. On the vehicle: proof of inspection has to be on the vehicle. A decal works if it shows the date, the carrier's name and address, the vehicle, and that it passed. WHAT WESTCO DOES Every report comes with photos. Fleet accounts can have us keep a record of each unit's inspection history so due dates don't sneak up on you. FLEET SERVICE → THE INSPECTION WHAT GETS CHECKED ON A DOT INSPECTION? We go through every Appendix A group that applies to your truck. APPENDIX A TO PART 396 Which systems does the federal standard cover? The standard is organized into inspection groups. Most trucks use all of the main ones; a couple only apply to vehicles with that equipment. THE GROUPS Brake system: service and parking brakes, adjustment (pushrod stroke), air or hydraulic leaks, hoses and lines, drums, rotors and linings, low-air warning, compressor and ABS where equipped. Coupling devices: fifth wheels, pintle hooks, drawbars, safety chains and their mounts. Exhaust system: leaks ahead of or below the cab, and exhaust parts close enough to burn wiring, fuel or brake lines. Fuel system: leaks, tank mounting and fuel caps. Lighting devices: every required light and reflector, working and the right color. Safe loading: cargo securement, and anything that could fall or shift. Steering mechanism: wheel free play, column, gearbox, pitman arm, tie rods and drag links, power steering. Suspension: axle parts, springs, U-bolts, torque and radius arms, air suspension. Frame: cracks, sagging, loose or missing fasteners, and tires or wheels rubbing the frame. Tires: tread depth (4/32" on steer tires, 2/32" on the others), cuts, bulges, exposed cord, flats and leaks. Wheels and rims: cracks, loose or missing lugs, and damaged rims. Windshield and wipers: cracks in the driver's view, and working wipers. Where equipped: motorcoach seats and rear impact guards. WHAT WESTCO DOES We photograph anything that fails or is close to the limit, so you can see exactly what we saw. BRAKE REPAIR → FAILURES WHY DO TRUCKS FAIL DOT INSPECTIONS? Most failures come from a short list of things, and most of them are fixable the same day. WHAT WE SEE MOST What are the most common reasons a truck fails? Lights, brake adjustment, tires, leaks and steering play. Hardly anything exotic. TOP 5 Lights: burned-out marker, clearance or brake lights, corroded trailer plugs and broken lenses. Brake adjustment: on air-brake trucks, pushrod stroke past the limit. On hydraulic trucks, worn pads and shoes, leaking calipers or wheel cylinders, or a parking brake that won't hold. Tires: steer tires under 4/32", others under 2/32", sidewall cuts, bulges or exposed cord. Leaks: air, brake fluid, fuel, and exhaust leaks near the cab. Steering play: worn tie rod ends, drag links or steering boxes. WHAT WESTCO DOES Before your inspection, walk around the truck with the lights and flashers on, and look at the tires. That alone catches a lot of failures. Colorado Springs: mag chloride on winter roads is hard on trailer wiring, light sockets and brake parts. Corroded connections are a common light failure on local trucks. BRAKE REPAIR → REPAIRS What happens if my truck fails? We show you what failed with photos, give you the repair estimate, and fix it in the same visit when we can. HOW WE HANDLE IT Photo proof: you see the actual failed part, not just a line on a form. Same-visit repairs: lights, brake parts, tires, leaks and steering parts can often be fixed while the truck is already here. Warranty: repairs we do come with our 24-month/24,000-mile warranty. Your call: nothing gets repaired without your approval. WHAT WESTCO DOES Once the repairs are done, we finish the inspection and give you the passing report and decal. FLEETS CAN YOU HANDLE DOT INSPECTIONS FOR MY WHOLE FLEET? Yes. We set up fleet accounts for Colorado Springs businesses that need a few trucks or a lot of trucks inspected and kept on schedule. FLEET ACCOUNTS What kinds of trucks do you inspect? All types of trucks, from pickups to heavy trucks. We don't inspect semi trailers. WHAT WE INSPECT Box trucks and cab-overs: Isuzu NPR, Ford and Chevy cutaways, and similar. Service and utility bodies: contractor, plumbing, electrical and utility trucks. Pickups that tow: 1-ton and 3/4-ton trucks pulling equipment or gooseneck trailers. Diesel trucks: Power Stroke, Duramax and Cummins. WHAT WESTCO DOES We keep track of when each unit is due, work around your schedule, and keep inspection records on file so an audit isn't a scramble. FLEET SERVICE → ISUZU NPR → SCHEDULING & RECORDS How does fleet scheduling work? You tell us which units and when. We stagger inspections so your whole fleet isn't parked at once. FLEET ACCOUNT Scheduling: we book trucks around your routes and slow days. Records: a photo report for each unit, kept on file, which helps you meet the 14-month retention rule. Same-visit repairs: failed items get fixed while the truck is here whenever we can. One shop for everything: the same techs handle brakes, diesel engine work and routine maintenance on your fleet. WHAT WESTCO DOES Call (719) 591-7743 to set up a fleet account. POWER STROKE → DURAMAX → CUMMINS → LIMITS What don't you inspect? Semi trailers. We inspect all types of trucks, but we don't do DOT inspections on semi trailers. GOOD TO KNOW Bumper-pull and gooseneck trailers behind pickups are a different case. Call us first and we'll tell you whether we can inspect yours. WHAT WESTCO DOES If you're not sure whether we can take your vehicle, call us before you book.
