Many 2011–2019 Hyundais with the 2.0T and 2.4L Theta II engines can develop rod-bearing knock that leads to engine failure. Many are covered by recalls or extended warranties. Warning signs Knocking that rises with RPM · Oil light · Stalling · Loss of power What we do We diagnose it and check your VIN for recalls or extended coverage before anything else. Colorado Springs: Stop driving an engine that knocks — continuing can seize it. Why is my Hyundai using oil? Some Hyundai GDI engines use oil between changes, which can starve the engine if the level drops too low. Warning signs Low oil between changes · Oil light · Blue smoke What we do We run an oil consumption test and recommend the right repair. Why does my Sonata's steering clunk? On 2011–2014 Sonatas, a clunk in the steering wheel at low speed is often a worn flexible steering coupler. Warning signs Clunk when turning · Felt in the wheel What we do We confirm it and replace the coupler. What is carbon buildup on a Hyundai GDI engine? Direct-injection engines don't wash the intake valves with fuel, so carbon builds up over time and causes rough running. Warning signs Rough idle · Cold-start misfire · Lost power What we do We inspect first and clean the valves only when carbon is actually affecting how it runs. Does Westco do Hyundai recall and warranty checks? We check your VIN for open recalls and extended coverage on every Hyundai before recommending engine work. What we check Open recalls · Extended warranties · Service history What we do If it's covered, we tell you — and point you to the right place. Not sure what's wrong with your Hyundai? Some are covered by a recall, a factory bulletin or an extended warranty. We check for those first, before we quote a single repair. NISSAN CVT Why does my Nissan CVT shudder, whine or lose power? Nissan's continuously variable transmissions are known for shudder, hesitation and a droning whine, and they can overheat and drop into a reduced-power mode. Nissan extended the CVT warranty on several models after a class-action lawsuit, so check coverage before paying for anything. GOOD TO KNOW Nissan extended CVT coverage from 60 months/60,000 miles to 84 months/84,000 miles on 2017-2018 Altima and 2018-2019 Sentra, Versa and Versa Note. WHAT OWNERS NOTICE, AND WHY Shudder or jerk: felt from a stop or at light throttle. Whine or drone: that rises with speed. Sudden power loss: the car feels like it hit a wall, often after a long climb or hot day. WHAT WESTCO DOES We scan the transmission computer for stored codes and fluid temperature history, check the fluid, and road test. If the car is inside an extended-warranty window, we tell you and help document the failure. If not, we repair or replace with a remanufactured unit and reprogram the computer. Colorado Springs: long climbs on I-25 over Monument Hill and up US-24 put real heat into a CVT. Fluid service matters more here than on flat ground. WARRANTY CLAIM HELP → FORD 6R80 & 10R80 Why does my Ford F-150 shift hard, clunk, or suddenly downshift? Ford's 6-speed (6R80) and 10-speed (10R80) automatics are behind the most common F-150, Expedition, Mustang and Ranger shift complaints. Some of it is covered by safety recalls, some is software, and some is wear. GOOD TO KNOW Ford has recalled 2011-2013 and 2015-2017 F-150s for the 6R80 unexpectedly downshifting into first gear. A class action over 2017-and-later 10R80 trucks alleges harsh, erratic shifting, and a separate recall covers certain remanufactured 10R80s that may not hold Park. WHAT OWNERS NOTICE, AND WHY Harsh or late shifts: especially 1-2, 2-3 or when coasting down. A clunk into gear: or the truck hunting between gears. Sudden downshift: the rear end squats or skids at speed. That one is a safety recall issue. WHAT WESTCO DOES We run your VIN for open recalls and bulletins, pull codes and shift data, check fluid level and condition, and load the latest Ford software with our in-house factory programming tools. Adaptive shift learning gets reset and relearned. Only then do we talk about hard parts. Also check: trucks that tow in the mountains build heat fast. Ask about fluid service if yours has never had one. FORD TRUCK SERVICE → FORD POWERSHIFT DPS6 Is my Focus or Fiesta dual-clutch still under warranty? Maybe. Ford extended coverage on the PowerShift (DPS6) dual-clutch transmission after years of shudder and slipping complaints on the Focus and Fiesta. GOOD TO KNOW For 2014-2016 Focus (built before Nov. 5, 2015) and 2014-2015 Fiesta (built before Oct. 15, 2014), Ford extended clutch coverage to 7 years/100,000 miles and transmission control module coverage to 10 years/150,000 miles. WHAT OWNERS NOTICE, AND WHY Shudder from a stop: like driving a manual with a worn clutch. Rollback or delay: on hills before it engages. Transmission warning light: or no-start in gear. WHAT WESTCO DOES We confirm whether your build date and mileage fall inside Ford's coverage. If they do, we point you to it. If not, we diagnose the clutch, the control module and the software, and repair or replace as needed. WARRANTY CLAIM HELP → GM 8L90 & 8L45 Why does my Silverado, Sierra or Cadillac shudder at highway speed? GM's 8-speed automatics (8L90 and 8L45) are known for a torque converter shudder that feels like driving over rumble strips. GM traced it to moisture in the original fluid and issued a bulletin calling for a full fluid exchange. GOOD TO KNOW GM's bulletin covers 8L45/8L90 units in 2015-2019 Silverado 1500, Sierra 1500, Yukon, Escalade, Colorado, Canyon, Camaro, Corvette, CTS, ATS and CT6, and calls for replacing the fluid with GM's updated specification. WHAT OWNERS NOTICE, AND WHY Rumble-strip feel: between about 25 and 80 mph under light throttle. Harsh 1-2 or 2-3 shifts: and clunks when slowing down. WHAT WESTCO DOES We check whether the bulletin fluid exchange has been done, perform it to GM's procedure if not, update the software and relearn shifts. If the converter is already damaged, we repair or replace it. CHEVY & GMC TRUCKS → GM 6T40 & 6T45 Why did my Equinox, Malibu or Cruze lose reverse or start shifting hard? GM's small 6-speed automatics (6T40/6T45) have a well-documented weak spot in the 3-5-reverse clutch. When its wave plate breaks, you typically lose reverse, third or fifth gear, or get hard shifts and a check-engine light. WHAT OWNERS NOTICE, AND WHY No reverse: or a long delay before it engages. Harsh or flared shifts: especially cold. Code P0776: or other pressure-control codes. WHAT WESTCO DOES We confirm the failure with codes, data and a road test, then repair with the updated parts or replace with a remanufactured unit. We update the software and run the clutch relearn afterward. CHEVY SERVICE → CHRYSLER / JEEP 9-SPEED Why does my Jeep Cherokee or Chrysler 200 shift strangely or drop into neutral? The 9-speed automatic (948TE) in 2014-and-later Cherokee, Renegade, Chrysler 200 and ProMaster City drew years of complaints about rough and erratic shifting. One problem, unexpectedly shifting to neutral, was a safety recall. GOOD TO KNOW A recall covered 2014-2015 Cherokee and 2015 Chrysler 200, Renegade and ProMaster (about 500,000 vehicles) for unintended shifts to neutral. The remedy was a software update. WHAT OWNERS NOTICE, AND WHY Jerky low-speed shifts: or a lurch pulling away. Sudden neutral: while driving, a recall issue. Hesitation: when you need power to merge. WHAT WESTCO DOES We check for open recalls and software updates first. Many of these improve with the latest calibration and a relearn. If there is mechanical damage, we repair or replace with a remanufactured unit. DODGE & RAM SERVICE → HONDA & ACURA V6 Why does my older Honda or Acura V6 slip or flare between gears? The 5-speed automatic behind Honda and Acura V6 engines in the early 2000s is known for failing third-gear clutches, which shows up as slipping, flares and a flashing D light. It was the subject of a class-action settlement. GOOD TO KNOW The settlement covered 2003-2004 Accord, 2002-2004 Odyssey, 2003-2004 Pilot, 2001-2002 MDX and 2003 TL/CL Type S. WHAT OWNERS NOTICE, AND WHY Flare between gears: engine revs jump before it catches. Flashing D light: the transmission computer found a fault. Delayed engagement: into Drive or Reverse. WHAT WESTCO DOES These vehicles are well past their settlement windows. We check fluid, pressures and codes, then repair or replace with a remanufactured unit. Correct Honda-spec fluid matters on these. SUBARU CVT Is my Subaru CVT covered by an extended warranty? Many are. Subaru doubled CVT coverage on roughly 1.5 million vehicles after complaints of shuddering and stalling. GOOD TO KNOW Subaru extended CVT coverage from 5 years/60,000 miles to 10 years/100,000 miles on 2010-2015 Legacy, Outback, Impreza, Crosstrek, Forester and WRX with a CVT. Check your VIN for later model years. WHAT OWNERS NOTICE, AND WHY Shudder or judder: at low speed or light throttle. Stalling: when coming to a stop. Whine: or a flashing AWD or check-engine light. WHAT WESTCO DOES We confirm coverage by VIN and point you to it if it applies. Out of coverage, we diagnose the torque converter, valve body and control module and repair or replace with a remanufactured unit. Also check: most Subarus here are AWD. Mismatched tire sizes or tread depth stress the drivetrain. Keep all four tires matched. WARRANTY CLAIM HELP → HYUNDAI & KIA DCT Why does my Hyundai or Kia hesitate when I pull away? The 7-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT) on many turbocharged Hyundai and Kia models is known for hesitation and shudder from a stop. On the 2016 Tucson it was a safety recall. GOOD TO KNOW A recall covered 2016 Tucson 1.6T models where clutch logic could delay acceleration from a stop; the fix was a software update. WHAT OWNERS NOTICE, AND WHY Delay from a stop: you press the gas and nothing happens for a beat. Shudder in slow traffic: or a burning smell after creeping. WHAT WESTCO DOES We check open recalls and software, test clutch engagement with live data, and run the clutch learn procedure. Worn clutches or a failed actuator get repaired or replaced. WARRANTY CLAIM HELP → 4X4 & TRANSFER CASES Why won't my 4x4 engage, or why does my Ford grind in 2WD? Most 4x4 engagement problems are electrical or vacuum, not the transfer case gears. On GM trucks and SUVs, a failed transfer case encoder motor is commonly reported behind the Service 4WD message. On Ford F-150s, grinding in 2WD is often the front hubs. GOOD TO KNOW A Ford bulletin covers 2013-2018 F-150, Expedition and Navigator 4x4s with an intermittent grinding noise in 2WD, caused by lost vacuum to the front hubs or worn hubs. WHAT OWNERS NOTICE, AND WHY Service 4WD message: or the selector lights flash and nothing happens. Grinding from the front: in 2WD, often on acceleration. Binding or hopping: in tight turns with 4WD on. WHAT WESTCO DOES We test the switch, encoder motor, module and wiring, check the vacuum lines and check valve, and inspect transfer case fluid. We fix what is actually failed, not the whole case. Colorado Springs: most 4x4s here only engage a few times a winter. Shift into 4WD once a month to keep the system working. FORD TRUCKS → CHEVY TRUCKS → DRIVESHAFTS & DIFFERENTIALS What causes a clunk or vibration from under my truck? A clunk when you shift into gear or a vibration that builds with speed usually points to worn U-joints, a failing center carrier bearing, or slop in the differential. WHAT OWNERS NOTICE, AND WHY Clunk into Drive or Reverse: or when you get on and off the gas. Vibration at speed: felt through the floor or seat. Whine or howl: that changes on and off throttle, usually a differential. WHAT WESTCO DOES We lift the truck and check every joint, the carrier bearing, yokes and axle backlash, and we check differential fluid for metal. You get a clear answer on what is worn and what can wait. DIESEL & HEAVY TRUCKS TRANSMISSION WORK ON DIESEL PICKUPS THAT TOW Diesel trucks put more torque through the transmission than anything else in the lot, and most of them tow. Heat and torque converter wear cause most of what we see. ALLISON 1000 · DURAMAX How long does an Allison 1000 last, and what kills it? The Allison 1000 behind the Duramax is one of the toughest pickup transmissions built, and most problems trace to heat, old fluid or modified power. Fluid on the right schedule is the best thing you can do for it. GOOD TO KNOW Allison publishes separate general-duty and severe-duty fluid and filter schedules for its approved fluids, and recommends fluid analysis as the best way to set intervals. WHAT OWNERS NOTICE, AND WHY Slipping or flaring: usually under load or after heavy towing. Harsh shifts: after engine tuning or a battery disconnect. Transmission temperature warnings: on long pulls. WHAT WESTCO DOES We check fluid condition, codes and shift adapts, and verify the truck's software. If the fluid is burned, we find out why before we change it. We repair or replace with a remanufactured unit when needed. DURAMAX SERVICE → FORD 6R140 & 10R140 · POWER STROKE What goes wrong with Super Duty TorqShift transmissions? Ford's 6-speed (6R140) and 10-speed (10R140) TorqShift automatics are strong, but shift flares, harsh shifts and delayed engagement are commonly reported. Many cases improve with software updates and a proper relearn before any hard parts are needed. WHAT OWNERS NOTICE, AND WHY Flare on the 2-3 shift: the engine revs up before the gear catches. Delayed engagement: into Drive or Reverse when cold. Clunky downshifts: while slowing down with a load. WHAT WESTCO DOES We check for Ford bulletins and software, read shift data live during a loaded road test, and verify fluid level with the procedure Ford requires. Programming is done in-house. POWER STROKE SERVICE → RAM 68RFE & AISIN · CUMMINS Is my Ram's 68RFE or Aisin transmission failing? The 68RFE behind the 6.7L Cummins is commonly reported to struggle with heat and torque converter wear when towing heavy, especially on modified trucks. The Aisin in heavy-duty Rams has its own reported issues, including overheating on steep grades and rough shifts. WHAT OWNERS NOTICE, AND WHY Converter shudder: felt as a vibration at steady cruise. Overheating or limp mode: on long climbs pulling a trailer. Slipping after power upgrades: a tuned truck can outrun the stock transmission. WHAT WESTCO DOES We check codes, converter slip and temperature data, fluid, and cooler flow. We tell you plainly whether the transmission can handle what you are asking it to tow, then repair or replace with a remanufactured unit. CUMMINS REPAIR → RAM SERVICE → TOWING HEAT Why does heat kill transmissions on tow rigs? Heat breaks down transmission fluid, and burned fluid wears clutches and the torque converter. On a diesel pulling a heavy trailer up a long grade, transmission temperatures climb fast. WHAT OWNERS NOTICE, AND WHY Temperature gauge climbing: on grades or in slow traffic with a trailer. Burnt smell: or dark fluid. Shudder at cruise: a common first sign of converter wear. WHAT WESTCO DOES We check the cooler, lines and thermostat for blockage or leaks, test converter lockup with live data, and recommend fluid service based on how you really use the truck. Colorado Springs: Ute Pass, Monument Hill and the passes west of town are long, steep pulls. Watch your transmission temperature and use tow/haul mode. MANUAL TRANSMISSIONS When does a diesel clutch or flywheel need replacing? A clutch on a diesel manual usually needs attention when it slips under load, chatters when you pull away, or the pedal feels different. Many diesel manuals use a dual-mass flywheel that wears along with the clutch. WHAT OWNERS NOTICE, AND WHY Slipping under load: revs rise but speed doesn't. Chatter or shudder: when pulling away with a trailer. Rattle at idle: that goes away with the clutch pedal pushed in. WHAT WESTCO DOES We road test, check the hydraulics, and inspect the flywheel when the clutch comes out, so you do not pay for the same labor twice. RV CHASSIS TRANSMISSION SERVICE FOR MOTORHOMES A motorhome transmission moves a lot of weight up long grades and then sits for months. We work on Ford F-53 and E-Series gas chassis, Workhorse chassis, and diesel pushers with Allison transmissions. ALLISON · DIESEL PUSHERS How often should the Allison in my diesel pusher be serviced? It depends on the fluid in it and how you use the coach, and Allison recommends fluid analysis as the best way to decide. Many coaches sit for months, so time matters as much as miles. WHAT OWNERS NOTICE, AND WHY Service or check-transmission light: on the shift pad. Harsh shifts: after sitting for a long time. Leaks: around the cooler lines and pan. WHAT WESTCO DOES We confirm the fluid type, check codes and fluid life reported by the transmission computer, and change fluid and filters to Allison's schedule. RV REPAIR → FORD F-53 & E-SERIES What goes wrong with transmissions on Ford gas motorhomes? On V10 chassis, the TorqShift automatics are commonly reported to overheat and wear the torque converter on long grades with a heavy coach. The 2020-and-later F-53 uses the 7.3L V8 with a 10-speed TorqShift. WHAT OWNERS NOTICE, AND WHY Converter shudder: at steady speed on the highway. Overheating on grades: especially with a car in tow. Harsh or slipping shifts: after a long climb. WHAT WESTCO DOES We check codes, converter lockup data, cooler condition and fluid, and update software where Ford has released it. We repair or replace with a remanufactured unit when needed. Colorado Springs: coming down from the mountains, use grade braking or a lower gear so the brakes and transmission both stay cool. RV REPAIR → WORKHORSE · ALLISON 1000 Does my Workhorse chassis need special transmission care? Workhorse gas chassis commonly use the Allison 1000, and the same rules apply as on a Duramax: correct fluid, on schedule, and keep it cool. Fluid that has sat for years in a stored coach is worth checking before a long trip. WHAT WESTCO DOES We check fluid condition, codes and cooler flow, and service to Allison's schedule for your fluid type. FLEETS KEEPING FLEET TRANSMISSIONS ON THE ROAD Fleet vehicles idle, stop and start, carry weight and rack up hours that don't show on the odometer. That is severe service by almost every manufacturer's definition, and it shortens fluid life. SEVERE-SERVICE INTERVALS How often should fleet transmissions get fluid service? Usually far sooner than the normal schedule. Most manufacturers publish a separate severe-service schedule for towing, heavy loads, extended idling and stop-and-go use, and most fleet vehicles fall under it. WHAT WESTCO DOES We set fluid service by how each unit is actually used, track it on your vehicle records, and flag units running hot or showing early wear before they strand a driver. FLEET SERVICE → FORD TRANSIT What should Transit fleets watch in the transmission? Transits use Ford's 6R80 and, on later vans, the 10R80, and they share the same shift complaints as F-150s: harsh shifts, clunks and gear hunting. Software updates and relearns fix many of them. WHAT WESTCO DOES We run every VIN for recalls and bulletins, program Ford software in-house, and check fluid on the severe schedule. FLEET SERVICE → ISUZU NPR · AISIN What fluid does an Isuzu NPR automatic take? It depends on the transmission, and the wrong one causes damage. Isuzu's bulletin says the 6-speed Aisin takes Isuzu's own fluid, and that fluid is not compatible with Dexron. GOOD TO KNOW Isuzu's service reminder for 2017 and earlier N-Series trucks lists different fluids and intervals for the 4-speed and 6-speed automatics, and warns that mixing the two causes transmission damage. WHAT WESTCO DOES We identify the transmission, use the correct fluid, and set the level to Isuzu's procedure. ISUZU NPR SERVICE → SPRINTER · 7-SPEED Why does my Sprinter go into limp mode? On Sprinters with the Mercedes 7-speed automatic, a failed speed sensor on the internal conductor plate is commonly reported to cause limp mode, harsh shifts and stuck gears. Low or wrong fluid can cause similar symptoms. WHAT WESTCO DOES We read Mercedes-specific codes, check fluid level to the factory procedure, and program and adapt the transmission after repair. MERCEDES & SPRINTER → COOLERS & IDLE HEAT Do fleet vehicles need an auxiliary transmission cooler? Often, yes. Idling, stop-and-go routes and heavy loads keep transmission temperatures high, and a larger or added cooler is one of the simplest ways to protect the transmission. WHAT WESTCO DOES We check the existing cooler and lines for blockage and leaks, and recommend an added cooler when a unit's workload calls for it. HOW WE WORK HOW WE DIAGNOSE, AND WHEN TO SERVICE FLUID Transmission repairs are big decisions. You should know exactly what failed and why before you agree to anything. DIAGNOSIS How do you figure out what is wrong with my transmission? We test before we recommend anything. Many problems turn out to be software, a sensor, wiring or fluid, not a full transmission. WHAT WE CHECK Scan and live data: codes, shift timing, clutch slip, converter lockup and fluid temperature with factory-level tools. Fluid check: level, color, smell and debris. Pressure test: when the data points to a hydraulic problem. Road test: to feel what you feel and record it. Software and relearns: we check for updated calibrations and program them in-house, then relearn shifts. WHAT WESTCO DOES You get a clear explanation of what failed and your options: a targeted repair, or replacement with a remanufactured unit. Repairs are backed by our 24-month/24,000-mile warranty. FLUID SERVICE When should I change my transmission fluid, and is it really lifetime fluid? If you tow, haul, drive in the mountains or sit in stop-and-go traffic, change it on the severe-service schedule in your owner's guide. Many newer vehicles list no normal fluid change, but that doesn't mean the fluid never wears out. WHAT TO KNOW Heat is the enemy: towing and long grades break fluid down much faster. Colorado counts as severe: steep grades and trailers put most local trucks on the severe schedule. Correct fluid only: modern transmissions are built around a specific fluid, and the wrong one can cause shift problems. Very old fluid: on a high-mileage unit we check condition first and explain the options before changing it. WHAT WESTCO DOES We use the fluid the manufacturer calls for and set the level to the factory procedure. We check the fluid, scan for codes and road-test it before recommending anything. Prefer the phone? Call (719) 591-7743. TRANSMISSION QUESTIONS WE ANSWER EVERY WEEK Straight answers from our techs WHY IS MY TRANSMISSION SLIPPING? Slipping can come from low or burnt fluid, a software issue, or internal wear. Fluid is the first thing to check because it is the cheapest thing to fix. Warning signs Engine revs without speed · Late or harsh shifts · Warning light · Burnt smell What we do We check the fluid level and condition, scan for codes and road-test before recommending any repair. Colorado Springs: Towing up I-25 or Ute Pass is hard on transmissions. A new shudder or slip after a trip is worth a check. WHY DOES MY TRUCK SHUDDER AT A STEADY SPEED? A shudder at steady speed often comes from the torque converter clutch. On some transmissions a fluid service with the correct fluid helps, on others parts are worn. Warning signs Rumble-strip feel · Shudder at 30–50 mph · Harsh shifts · Transmission codes What we do We road-test it, scan the transmission and check the fluid, then tell you what will actually fix it. Colorado Springs: Towing a trailer up I-25? A transmission that shudders under load needs a look before the next trip. DO I NEED A TRANSMISSION FLUID SERVICE? Most transmissions need fluid service at some interval, and towing or mountain driving shortens it. The right fluid matters as much as the change itself. When to do it Dark or burnt fluid · High miles · Towing · Shift changes What we do We use the fluid your transmission is built for and check for leaks while it is on the lift. WHAT IS THAT CLUNK WHEN I SHIFT INTO GEAR? A clunk into drive or reverse often points to a worn U-joint, loose driveline parts or worn mounts. It is worth checking before a joint lets go. Warning signs Clunk into gear · Squeak at low speed · Vibration · Drips at the axle What we do We check every joint, mount and seal on a lift and show you which parts are worn. WHY WON’T MY 4X4 ENGAGE? It can be the switch, an actuator, wiring, the transfer case motor or the transfer case itself. Scan data narrows it down fast. Warning signs 4x4 light flashing · Grinding when engaging · No front drive · Service 4WD message What we do We scan the system, test the electrical side and inspect the transfer case, then repair the part that failed. Colorado Springs: Snow season is when 4x4 problems show up. Test it before the first storm. NOT SURE WHAT YOUR TRANSMISSION IS DOING? Tell us when it happens and how it feels when you book. Nissan's CVT in the Altima, Rogue, Sentra and others can judder, whine or hesitate as it wears — worn fluid makes it worse. Warning signs Shudder · Whine · Hesitation · Limp mode What we do We scan the CVT, check the fluid and for updates, and tell you whether it needs service or repair. Why is my Pathfinder or Frontier coolant pink and foamy? On 2005–2010 Frontiers, Xterras and Pathfinders, the radiator's internal transmission cooler can fail and mix coolant into the transmission — damaging it. Warning signs Pink, milky coolant · Slipping transmission · Shift problems What we do We test for cross-contamination and repair the radiator — and the transmission if it's been affected. Why does my 4.0L Nissan whine? On many 4.0L V6 Frontiers, Xterras and Pathfinders, a whine that rises with RPM is often worn timing chain guides. Warning signs Whine with RPM · Cam timing codes What we do We confirm it and replace the chains, guides and tensioners together. Why does my Titan tick when it's cold? A tick on a cold start on the Titan and Armada V8 is commonly a cracked exhaust manifold. Warning signs Tick on cold start · Exhaust smell What we do We find the crack and replace the manifold and hardware. How often should Nissan CVT fluid be changed? Nissan CVTs rely on clean fluid. Many 2011–2019 Kias with the 2.0T and 2.4L Theta II engines can develop rod-bearing knock that leads to engine failure. Why is my Kia using oil? Some Kia GDI engines use oil between changes, which can starve the engine if the level drops too low. Warning signs Low oil between changes · Oil light · Blue smoke What we do We run an oil consumption test and recommend the right repair. What is carbon buildup on a Kia GDI engine? Direct-injection engines don't wash the intake valves with fuel, so carbon builds up over time and causes rough running. Warning signs Rough idle · Cold-start misfire · Lost power What we do We inspect first and clean the valves only when carbon is actually affecting how it runs. Why is my Kia Soul losing power? Power loss on a Soul can be misfires, a failing catalytic converter, or engine wear from low oil. Warning signs Loss of power · Misfire · Check engine light What we do We scan it and test to find the real cause. Does Westco do Kia recall and warranty checks? Find your engine below to see what it’s in, what commonly goes wrong, and how we handle it. Not sure which engine you have? Check the chassis, not the coach brand. The chassis maker and model are on the sticker in the driver’s door jamb, and a diesel’s engine data plate is on the engine itself. GAS Ford V10 · Ford 7.3L · Chevy Express 6.0L/6.6L · Ford Transit · Ram ProMaster · Workhorse 8.1L · Ford 460 · Chevy 454 DIESEL Cummins ISB 5.9/6.7 · Cummins ISC/ISL/L9 · Cummins ISX/X15 · CAT 3126/C7 · CAT C9/C13/C15 · Mercedes Sprinter · Ford Power Stroke Super C · International VT365/MaxxForce 7 GAS · FORD F-53 & E-SERIES What goes wrong with the Ford 6.8L V10 in a motorhome? The V10 is the most common gas motorhome engine on the road, and its best-known problems are spark plugs and exhaust manifold studs. Both are fixable, and a well-kept V10 will pull a heavy coach for a long time. FOUND IN Ford F-53 Class A chassis from about 1999 to 2019, and E-350/E-450 Class C cutaways from 1997 to 2019. Later F-53s use the 3-valve version. WHAT OWNERS NOTICE, AND WHY A loud “pop,” then ticking and a misfire: on earlier 2-valve engines a spark plug can blow out of the aluminum head. We repair the threads with a permanent insert instead of replacing the head. Plugs that break off during a tune-up: 3-valve engines use a two-piece plug that seizes with carbon. It takes Ford’s extraction procedure, not a bigger wrench. A tick at cold start that fades as it warms up: broken exhaust manifold studs or a cracked manifold. Very common on this engine. A misfire with no check-engine light: a failing ignition coil, often on the rear cylinders against the firewall. RV WEAR The V10 lives at high rpm on mountain grades and sits under a hot engine cover. Heavy fuel use and slowing on long climbs are normal for this engine, not a fault. WHAT WESTCO DOES Spark plugs done to Ford’s torque and procedure, manifold stud and manifold repair, coil and misfire diagnosis, and cooling and transmission service for towing and mountain driving. GAS · FORD F-53 & E-SERIES (NEWER) What should I know about the Ford 7.3L “Godzilla” gas engine in an RV? The 7.3L V8 replaced the V10 in Ford’s motorhome chassis, and so far its record is good. The one issue to watch is lifter noise at idle. FOUND IN F-53 Class A chassis from the 2020 chassis year (often sold as 2021 and newer coaches), and E-350/E-450 Class C cutaways from 2021 on, paired with Ford’s 10-speed transmission. WHAT OWNERS NOTICE, AND WHY Ticking or tapping at idle, sometimes followed by a misfire: roller lifter and camshaft damage has been reported, mostly on 2020–2021 engines. Low oil pressure at hot idle is the commonly cited cause, and Ford has released an idle-speed software update for some applications. RV WEAR Long idling, like running the dash A/C at a campsite, is the situation owners most often connect to the lifter issue. WHAT WESTCO DOES We listen for lifter noise and check the oil filter for metal before it turns into an engine replacement, check for the latest software updates, and service the oil to the correct spec. GAS · CHEVY EXPRESS / GMC SAVANA CUTAWAY What should I know about the Chevy Express 6.0L and 6.6L in a Class C? The Chevy Express and GMC Savana cutaway is the other common Class C chassis. It used the 6.0L V8 through 2020 and the 6.6L V8 from 2021. Both are tough engines, and most trouble comes from heat and weight. FOUND IN Express/Savana 3500 and 4500 cutaway Class C motorhomes. WHAT OWNERS NOTICE, AND WHY Rough idle or misfire: cracked exhaust manifolds or broken bolts, or a failed coil or plug in the tight engine cover. Ticking at cold start: lifter noise. Transmission running hot: a Class C loaded close to its maximum weight. WHAT WESTCO DOES Misfire and manifold repair, cooling and transmission service, and a weight and brake check before mountain trips. GAS · FORD TRANSIT CAMPER VANS What goes wrong with the Ford Transit engines in a Class B camper van? Transit-based camper vans use the 3.7L V6 (2015–2019), the 3.5L V6 (2020 on) or the 3.5L EcoBoost. The thing to watch is the timing chain, especially on the EcoBoost. WHAT OWNERS NOTICE, AND WHY A rattle at cold start and cam timing codes: a stretched timing chain or worn cam phasers, most commonly reported on the EcoBoost. EcoBoost stumbling in humid weather: condensation in the intercooler. WHAT WESTCO DOES Timing chain and phaser repair, intercooler diagnosis, and oil service on schedule. Colorado Springs: at our altitude the EcoBoost keeps its power better than a non-turbo engine, but turbo heat on long climbs is real. GAS · RAM PROMASTER CAMPER VANS What goes wrong with the Ram ProMaster 3.6L in a camper van? The ProMaster is the base for many Class B camper vans, and its 3.6L Pentastar V6 has one well-known weak spot: the plastic oil filter housing. FOUND IN Ram ProMaster 1500/2500/3500, 2014 on. WHAT OWNERS NOTICE, AND WHY Oil smell or a drip at the back of the engine: the oil filter housing and cooler crack. It often gets mistaken for a rear main seal, and coolant can leak with it. Ticking at cold start: rocker arm or lifter wear. Misfires: coils or plugs. WHAT WESTCO DOES Oil filter housing replacement, valvetrain diagnosis and repair, and brake and front-drive checks for a heavy van. GAS · WORKHORSE W-SERIES What goes wrong with the 8.1L Vortec in a Workhorse motorhome? The 8.1L big-block was GM’s engine in the Workhorse W-series motorhome chassis until GM stopped making it around 2009. The common problems are exhaust manifold bolts, oil use and the crank sensor. FOUND IN Workhorse W-series Class A chassis (W16–W24), early 2000s to about 2009, with the Allison 1000 transmission. WHAT OWNERS NOTICE, AND WHY Ticking or an exhaust leak, usually worse on the passenger side: broken exhaust manifold bolts. Stalling or a no-start when hot: a failed crankshaft position sensor. Burning oil: common on this engine, often around a quart every 1,000–1,500 miles. Misfires and oil leaks: fouled plugs and leaking intake gaskets. WHAT WESTCO DOES Manifold bolt extraction and repair, sensor and misfire diagnosis, Allison transmission service, and brake inspection and repair. Also check: Workhorse chassis had a major recall for sticking front brake calipers. We check recall status and brake condition when your coach is in. GAS · OLDER FORD MOTORHOMES What should I know about the Ford 460 in an older motorhome? The 7.5L 460 powered Ford motorhome chassis until the V10 took over in the late 1990s. We work on them, but every one is now more than 25 years old and parts are getting harder to find, so repairs can take longer while we track parts down. FOUND IN Ford Class A motorhome chassis through about 1998, and E-350 Class C cutaways through 1996, usually with the E4OD transmission. WHAT OWNERS NOTICE, AND WHY Ticking or an exhaust smell in the cab: cracked exhaust manifolds or broken studs. Stalling or hard restarts when hot, especially on grades: a weak fuel pump and heat-soaked fuel (vapor lock). Overheating on long climbs: a tired radiator or fan clutch. Transmission slipping or flaring: the E4OD overheating under heavy weight. WHAT WESTCO DOES Manifold, fuel system and cooling system repair, and transmission service. GAS · OLDER CHEVY / GMC MOTORHOMES What should I know about the Chevy 454 in an older motorhome? The 7.4L 454 powered Chevy and GMC P30 motorhome chassis through the 1990s. We work on them, but like the Ford 460, parts for engines this old are getting harder to find, so repairs can take longer. FOUND IN Chevrolet/GMC P30 Class A chassis, 1970s to late 1990s, with the TH400 or 4L80E transmission. Workhorse took over the P30 chassis around 1999. WHAT OWNERS NOTICE, AND WHY Stalling on hot days or grades: fuel boiling in the lines (vapor lock). Ticking at the exhaust: manifold leaks or broken bolts. Overheating: a small cooling system with a clogged radiator. Oil leaks and burning oil: age. WHAT WESTCO DOES Fuel line and fuel system replacement, cooling system repair, manifold work and general engine repair. Safety note: old rubber fuel lines on these chassis are a fire risk. We check them any time one of these is in. DIESEL · PUSHERS, SUPER C & SPRINTER DIESEL RV ENGINES Check the engine’s year, not the coach’s. Particulate filters (DPF) arrived for 2007 and DEF for 2010, and engine makers built engines ahead of each deadline. A “2008” coach can carry an older engine without a DPF, and a “2010” coach can carry a 2009 engine without DEF. The engine data plate tells you which you have, and that decides what service it needs. DIESEL · CUMMINS ISB 5.9 / 6.7 What goes wrong with the Cummins 6.7 (ISB) in a diesel pusher? The Cummins ISB is the most common engine in mid-size diesel pushers and Super C motorhomes. On 2007 and newer engines, most trouble comes from the emissions system, not the engine itself. FOUND IN Freightliner XC-series, Spartan and Workhorse pusher chassis, and Freightliner M2 Super C. The 5.9L ran until about 2006, the 6.7L from 2007 on. IS IT THE SAME AS A RAM 6.7? The same engine family, but not the same setup: different computer calibration, a rear radiator, an Allison transmission and commercial emissions timing. For Ram pickups, see our Cummins page. WHAT OWNERS NOTICE, AND WHY Frequent regens, derate, poor mileage (2007+): a loaded-up DPF, EGR valve or cooler, or a sooted turbo. Worse on coaches that idle a lot or only take short trips. Derate with a DEF quality or DEF level warning (2010+): a failed DEF sensor, heater or doser. Overheating on climbs: a pusher’s rear radiator packed with dirt, or a weak fan clutch. 5.9 only, hard starting and low power: lift pump or injection pump failure. WHAT WESTCO DOES Emissions system diagnosis and repair, radiator and cooling system cleaning and repair, fuel filters and water separator, and valve adjustment. CUMMINS DIESEL REPAIR → DIESEL · CUMMINS ISC 8.3 / ISL 8.9 / L9 What goes wrong with the Cummins ISC, ISL and L9 in a motorhome? These are the engines in mid-to-large diesel pushers. The one to know about is the ISL’s EGR cooler, which can fail and push coolant into the exhaust. FOUND IN Freightliner XC/XCS, Spartan and Roadmaster pushers. The ISC 8.3 ran through about 2006, the ISL 8.9 from about 2007 to 2016, and the L9 from 2017. Changeover years vary by coach builder. WHAT OWNERS NOTICE, AND WHY Coolant loss, white smoke or coolant out the exhaust (ISL): EGR cooler failure, often started by a clogged oil cooler. Left alone, it can damage the turbo and soak the DPF. Ticking or exhaust smell (8.3): a cracked exhaust manifold or broken bolts. Hard start or stumble (ISC): air getting into the fuel system through a failing lift pump. Coolant problems that eat the cylinder sleeves: neglected coolant chemistry. These engines need their coolant tested, not just topped off. WHAT WESTCO DOES EGR and oil cooler diagnosis and repair, coolant testing and service, fuel system work and emissions system repair. DIESEL · CUMMINS ISX / X15 Do you work on the Cummins ISX and X15 in large coaches? Yes. The big Cummins engines are found in high-end diesel pushers, and they share the smaller Cummins engines’ weak points: the EGR cooler and the emissions system. FOUND IN High-end Spartan and Freightliner pushers. ISX from the early 2000s, ISX15 from 2010, X15 from about 2016. WHAT OWNERS NOTICE, AND WHY Losing coolant with no visible leak: the EGR cooler. Derate and regen faults: DPF and DEF parts. DEF heads are reported to fail from heat in coach engine bays. Power loss: the turbo actuator. WHAT WESTCO DOES EGR system diagnosis, DPF and DEF repair, turbo diagnosis, and DEF system checks before storage. DIESEL · CAT 3126 / C7 What goes wrong with the CAT C7 and 3126 in an RV? The C7 and the 3126 before it were popular mid-size pusher engines. Caterpillar stopped making on-highway engines after 2009, so every one is at least 15 years old. The most common complaint is hard starting. FOUND IN Freightliner XC and Spartan mid-size pushers. The 3126 ran through about 2003, the C7 from about 2003 to 2009. WHAT OWNERS NOTICE, AND WHY Hard start when cold, or a no-start: these engines use engine oil pressure to fire the injectors. A worn high-pressure oil pump, leaking seals or old oil can leave too little pressure to start. Oil leaks at the back of the engine: high-pressure oil pump seals and lines. Misfire or smoke: injector O-rings or solenoids. Overheating on long climbs: commonly reported on the C7. WHAT WESTCO DOES High-pressure oil system diagnosis and repair, injector work, cooling system repair, and starting and charging system service. Colorado Springs: hard cold starts matter here. Oil condition, batteries and the intake heater decide whether it fires on a cold morning. DIESEL · CAT C9 / C13 / C15 Do you work on the CAT C9, C13 and C15 in diesel pushers? Yes. The larger Caterpillar engines powered mid and high-end pushers until 2009. Parts support is shrinking, so good diagnosis matters even more. FOUND IN Spartan, Freightliner and similar pushers, about 2004–2009. WHAT OWNERS NOTICE, AND WHY Hard start (C9): the same high-pressure oil system issues as the C7. Loss of power or high exhaust temperatures (C13/C15): the twin-turbo and air system. Loss of boost: a leaking charge air cooler. Regen faults (2007+): CAT’s regeneration system and the DPF. WHAT WESTCO DOES Air and turbo system diagnosis, charge air cooler testing, DPF and regeneration repair, and cooling system work. DIESEL · MERCEDES SPRINTER What goes wrong with the Mercedes Sprinter diesel in a motorhome? The Sprinter is the base for many Class B vans and small Class C motorhomes. The 3.0L V6 diesel is the most common, and its best-known problems are oil cooler leaks and limp mode. FOUND IN Sprinter vans and cab-chassis. The 3.0L V6 ran from 2007 to 2022, the 2.1L 4-cylinder in some later years, and the 2.0L 4-cylinder from 2023. WHAT OWNERS NOTICE, AND WHY Oil in the valley between the cylinder heads: oil cooler seals. Limp mode: an EGR valve, the intake swirl flap motor, the turbo actuator, or a split intercooler hose. Black, tar-like buildup around an injector: a leaking injector seal, often called “black death.” Fix it early. A start countdown on the dash (2010+): a DEF heater or sensor failure, more common in cold weather. WHAT WESTCO DOES Oil cooler seal repair, limp-mode diagnosis, injector seal repair, DEF system repair, and module programming with our factory-level programming tool. We also service Sprinters that aren’t RVs. MERCEDES SERVICE → DIESEL · FORD F-450 / F-550 SUPER C Do you work on Ford Power Stroke Super C motorhomes? Yes. Super C motorhomes on the Ford F-450/F-550 chassis use the Power Stroke diesel we work on every week. Earlier units have the 6.0L or 6.4L, and 2011 and newer units the 6.7L. WHAT OWNERS NOTICE, AND WHY No-start with metal in the fuel system (6.7L): high-pressure fuel pump failure, often set off by water or bad fuel. Coolant loss: EGR cooler or radiator leaks. Derate and regen faults: the DPF, DEF heater and NOx sensors. WHAT WESTCO DOES Full Power Stroke diagnosis and repair on every generation. POWER STROKE REPAIR → DIESEL · INTERNATIONAL VT365 / MAXXFORCE 7 Do you work on International VT365 and MaxxForce 7 engines in RVs? Yes. These are the International engines Ford sold as the 6.0L and 6.4L Power Stroke. They’re found in E-Series diesel Class C motorhomes and some Super C motorhomes on International chassis. FOUND IN E-Series diesel cutaways from 2004 to 2010 (VT365 / 6.0L). The MaxxForce 7 is found in Super C coaches on International chassis from about 2008. Navistar stopped making MaxxForce engines in 2016. WHAT OWNERS NOTICE, AND WHY Coolant loss or white smoke: head gaskets or the EGR cooler. Stalling or hard start (VT365): a failing injector control module (FICM). Oil level rising (MaxxForce 7): fuel getting into the oil from regens. WHAT WESTCO DOES Head gasket, EGR cooler, oil cooler and FICM repair, and coolant system service. DIESEL · BEFORE STORAGE AND BEFORE A TRIP What should diesel RV owners check before storage or a big trip? Most diesel RV trouble we see starts with a coach that sat. Three things to know: WHAT OWNERS NOTICE, AND WHY DEF goes bad. It freezes at 12°F and keeps about two years, less in heat. Old DEF can trigger a derate, so top off with fresh DEF before a trip. Coaches that sit don’t regen. Low-mile diesels that only take short trips build up soot. A long highway run helps, and a check before the season helps more. Rear radiators pack up with dirt. Pushers pull road dirt straight into the radiator. Have it cleaned before the summer climbs. WHAT WESTCO DOES A pre-season check of DEF, regen health, cooling and batteries before the first long climb. Every BMW has its own weak spots. This is what we see most in our bays. 3 Series (E90) 2006–2011 • Oil filter housing gasket leak • Valve cover gasket leak • Electric water pump failure • N54 high-pressure fuel pump (335i) 3 Series (F30) 2012–2019 • N20 timing chain guide failure, 2012–2015 • Oil filter housing gasket leak • Electric water pump failure 5 Series (F10) 2011–2016 • N20 timing chain on 528i, 2012–2015 • Oil leaks on N55 six-cylinders • N63 V8 oil consumption (550i) X3 / X5 2007–2018 • Oil filter housing and valve cover leaks • Cooling system failures • Transfer case issues on some X3s X1 2012–2015 • N20 timing chain guides • Oil leaks N63 V8 550i · X5 50i · 750i • Oil consumption • Valve stem seals • Turbo coolant and oil lines VANOS / Valvetronic Most gas engines • Rough idle • Loss of power • Cam timing codes Keep it healthy What we tell BMW owners • Change oil every 5,000–7,500 miles • Replace the cooling system before it fails • Fix oil leaks before they reach the belts • Don't ignore a coolant warning BMW questions we answer every week Straight answers from our techs Why is my BMW leaking oil? The most common BMW oil leaks are the oil filter housing gasket and the valve cover gasket. Oil dripping from the filter housing can soak the serpentine belt, which can shred and get pulled into the front engine seal. Warning signs Burning oil smell · Smoke from the engine bay · Oil on the belt · Low oil warning What we do We find the exact source and replace the gasket — and inspect the belt while we're there. Why is my BMW N20 making a whining or rattling noise? On 2012–2015 BMWs with the N20 four-cylinder — 328i, 528i, X1, X3 and others — the timing chain guides can wear and break, starting as a whine and ending in engine damage if ignored. Warning signs Whining at idle · Rattle on startup · Cam timing codes What we do We inspect the chain and guides and replace them as one job when they're worn. Colorado Springs: Don't wait on an N20 whine — the chain can fail without much more warning. Why did my BMW overheat without warning? Many BMWs use an electric water pump that can stop working with little warning. Thermostats and plastic expansion tanks also fail with age. Warning signs Coolant warning · Overheating · Fan running hard · Reduced power What we do We test the pump, thermostat and pressure-test the system, then replace the failed parts — often as a set on higher-mileage cars. Why is my BMW 335i hard to start or going into limp mode? On the N54 twin-turbo engine in 2007–2010 335i models, a failing high-pressure fuel pump causes long cranks, stumbling and limp mode. Injectors and wastegates also wear. Warning signs Long crank · Limp mode · Stumbling · Fuel pressure codes What we do We test fuel pressure under load and repair the pump, injectors or wastegate that's failing. Why is my BMW idling rough? A rough idle on a BMW often traces to VANOS solenoids, the Valvetronic system, vacuum leaks, ignition coils — or carbon buildup on direct-injection engines. Warning signs Rough idle · Misfire · Loss of power · Check engine light What we do We read the BMW-specific data to find the cause and fix that part, not a guess. Not sure what's wrong with your BMW? Tell us what it's doing when you book. We diagnose before we repair, and you approve the work before we start. Some VQ35DE engines in 2003–2007 G35s use oil between changes, often from piston rings. Warning signs Low oil between changes · Oil light · Smoke What we do We run an oil consumption test and recommend the right repair. Why won't my G37 start or unlock the steering? On many G37s, a failed electronic steering lock prevents starting and shows a steering lock warning. Warning signs Won't start · Steering lock warning · Key light flashing What we do We confirm it and replace or repair the steering lock. Why does my QX60 CVT shudder? Early QX60s and JX35s with the CVT can judder and hesitate as the transmission wears. Warning signs Shudder · Hesitation · Whine What we do We scan it, check the fluid and for updates, and recommend service or repair. Why does my QX56 or QX80 tick on startup? A cold-start tick on the V8 is commonly a cracked exhaust manifold. Warning signs Tick on cold start · Exhaust smell What we do We find the crack and replace the manifold. How often should Infiniti CVT fluid be changed? CVTs rely on clean fluid. Servicing it on schedule helps it last — sooner with towing. Signs it's overdue Shudder · Delayed engagement What we do We service it with the correct fluid. Not sure what's wrong with your Infiniti? Tell us what it's doing when you book. No pressure. ✓ Photos of every finding ✓ What can wait and what cannot ✓ Next service reminder ✓ Leak check before it leaves CARS, SUVS & LIGHT TRUCKS WHAT DOES YOUR CAR ACTUALLY NEED FROM AN OIL CHANGE? It needs the oil your manufacturer specifies, the right filter, and a fresh set of eyes on the rest of the vehicle. Modern engines are built around specific oil approvals, and some run oil as thin as 0W-16. THE RIGHT SPEC Why does the exact oil spec matter so much now? Many modern engines are designed around a specific oil approval, not just a viscosity number on the cap. WHAT WE MATCH GM: most GM gas engines call for oil licensed to dexos1. The current version, dexos1 Gen 3, adds tougher limits on turbo deposits and low-speed pre-ignition. European makes: Mercedes-Benz (MB 229.51, 229.52, 229.71), Volkswagen/Audi (VW 502 00, 504 00, 508 00) and BMW (Longlife-01, LL-17 FE+) publish their own approvals. An oil can be the right thickness and still not carry the approval your engine was tested with. Industry standards: API SP and ILSAC GF-6 added protection against low-speed pre-ignition and timing chain wear, and newer categories keep raising the bar. WHAT WESTCO DOES We look up the spec for your year, make and engine before we open a bottle, and we put that spec on your record. THIN OILS Is 0W-16 or 0W-20 oil too thin for my engine? Not if your engine calls for it. Engines built for thin oil have tighter clearances and oil systems designed around it. WHAT TO KNOW Why it exists: thinner oil flows faster at start-up and helps fuel economy. 0W-16 oils have their own category because they are not meant to replace thicker grades. The rule: use the grade in your owner's manual. Going thicker 'for protection' can hurt engines that rely on oil pressure to run variable valve timing or cylinder deactivation. WHAT WESTCO DOES We fill to the grade your manufacturer lists, not a one-size-fits-all bulk oil. WHEN TO CHANGE IT Should I follow the oil life monitor or change it by miles? Follow the oil life monitor if your vehicle has one, and don't let it go past the time limit in your manual. WHAT TO KNOW How monitors work: most estimate wear from engine revolutions, temperature and run time. They don't sample the oil, but they account for how you actually drive better than a fixed mileage sticker. Time still counts: oil ages even when the car sits. Many manufacturers set a maximum of about one year no matter what the monitor says. The old 3,000-mile rule: for most modern vehicles running synthetic oil, it's more often than needed. Your manual is the authority. WHAT WESTCO DOES We reset your oil life monitor after every service and leave a reminder based on your manufacturer's schedule. SEVERE SERVICE Does my driving count as severe service? It might. Many owner's manuals list conditions that call for shorter oil change intervals, and plenty of Colorado driving fits them. COMMON SEVERE-SERVICE CONDITIONS Short trips: engines that rarely reach full temperature, especially in freezing weather, collect moisture and fuel in the oil. Towing and hauling: trailers, campers and loaded beds put more heat and stress on the oil. Dust and dirt roads: gravel roads and dusty job sites load up air filters. Mountain driving and idling: long climbs, heavy stop-and-go and extended idling are often on the list too. WHAT WESTCO DOES Tell us how you drive and we'll show you which schedule in your manual applies. We won't push you onto a shorter interval your vehicle doesn't need. Colorado Springs: cold mornings, short trips around town, mountain grades and dirt roads are all common here. Check whether your manual's severe-service schedule fits how you drive. TURBO & DIRECT INJECTION Are turbocharged and direct-injection engines harder on oil? They can be. Small turbo engines with direct injection put demands on oil that older engines didn't. WHAT TO KNOW Low-speed pre-ignition: under heavy load at low rpm, some turbo direct-injection engines can have fuel ignite too early. Oil chemistry plays a part, which is why newer oil standards test for it. Fuel dilution: direct injection can wash small amounts of fuel into the oil, especially on short trips and cold starts. Turbo heat: turbochargers spin on oil and run hot. Old or wrong oil can leave deposits in the bearings. WHAT WESTCO DOES We use oil that meets your engine's current approval and watch for signs of dilution, like a rising oil level or a fuel smell on the dipstick. ENGINE HEALTH Can skipping oil changes lead to timing chain or lifter problems? Oil condition is one of several factors in timing chain and lifter wear, and it's the one you control. GOOD TO KNOW Timing chains, tensioners, variable valve timing parts and hydraulic lifters all rely on clean oil at the right pressure. Stretched chains, start-up rattles, ticking lifters and cam timing codes can have several causes, including design issues on some engines. Old, thinned or wrong-spec oil doesn't help. WHAT WESTCO DOES If we hear start-up rattle or ticking, see sludge, or find a cam timing code, we'll tell you what we found and what it may mean. ENGINE REPAIR → WHAT'S INCLUDED What's included in a Westco oil change? The correct oil and filter for your engine, a fluid check, a visual inspection, and a reset of your oil life monitor. EVERY TIME Oil and filter to spec: the oil approval and grade your manufacturer lists, and a filter that fits your engine. Fluid check: we check your other fluid levels and look for leaks. Visual inspection: a free inspection with the service, with photos of anything worth your attention. Reset: we reset your oil life monitor and leave a reminder for next time. WHAT WESTCO DOES You get a clear report, and nothing extra gets done without your okay. DIESEL PICKUPS & WORK TRUCKS WHAT MAKES A DIESEL OIL CHANGE DIFFERENT? Diesel engines hold more oil, run it harder, and depend on the right oil category. Power Stroke, Duramax, Cummins, Isuzu NPR and Sprinter diesels each have their own specs. CK-4 VS FA-4 What's the difference between CK-4 and FA-4 diesel oil? CK-4 is the backward-compatible heavy-duty diesel oil. FA-4 is a thinner oil made only for certain newer engines, and it is not a drop-in replacement. WHAT THE MANUFACTURERS SAY CK-4: designed for 2017 and newer diesel engines and can generally be used in older ones that called for earlier categories. FA-4: a lower-viscosity oil for select 2017 and newer highway engines. API states FA-4 is not backward compatible with CK-4 and earlier diesel oils. Ford Power Stroke: when FA-4 was introduced, Ford said it should not be used in any Ford diesel, and it specifies oil meeting its own standard for many Power Stroke engines. GM Duramax: GM diesel engines that called for dexos2 now use dexosD-licensed oil in the grade listed for your engine. Ram/Cummins: follow the oil standard and grade in your Ram owner's manual. WHAT WESTCO DOES We match the oil to your truck's manual and engine, not to what's on sale. POWER STROKE → DURAMAX → CUMMINS → CAPACITY Why does a diesel take so much more oil? Diesels hold much more oil than a car engine, and the extra volume helps carry soot and heat. GOOD TO KNOW Diesel oil holds soot from combustion in suspension, and that's why it turns dark fast. Dark oil is normal. Overfilling or underfilling is not. WHAT WESTCO DOES We fill to your engine's listed capacity, then check the level after the engine runs and the filter fills. FUEL SYSTEM Should I change my diesel fuel filters at the same time? If they're due, an oil change is the ideal time. Modern high-pressure fuel systems have very little tolerance for water or dirt. WHAT TO KNOW Water separator: most diesel pickups have a water-in-fuel separator that should be drained on schedule. Water in the fuel can damage injectors and high-pressure pumps. Fuel filter intervals: each manufacturer sets its own. Ours are based on your manual and your records. WHAT WESTCO DOES We check when your fuel filters were last done, drain the water separator where your truck has a serviceable one, and let you know before replacing anything. Colorado Springs: winter here can gel fuel and freeze water trapped in a separator. Fall is a good time to service the fuel filters. DEF Can you top off my DEF during an oil change? Yes. Just ask. GOOD TO KNOW Most 2010 and newer diesel pickups use diesel exhaust fluid (DEF). Running low brings warnings, and running out can limit your speed. DEF also has a shelf life and doesn't like heat. WHAT WESTCO DOES We check your DEF level and top it off with fresh fluid if you'd like. ISUZU NPR → RV CHASSIS HOW IS AN RV OIL CHANGE DIFFERENT? RVs rack up time and engine hours faster than miles, and they often sit for months. The oil should be changed on the schedule the chassis manufacturer sets, not just by the odometer. SCHEDULE How often should I change the oil in my motorhome? Follow the chassis manufacturer's schedule, and pay attention to the time limit, not just the miles. WHAT TO KNOW Time: many RVs never reach a mileage interval before a year goes by. Oil still ages, collects moisture and loses additives while it sits. Hours: diesel pushers and some chassis track engine hours. Long idling adds hours without adding miles. Heavy duty: a loaded motorhome is working hard all the time. Many chassis manuals treat that as severe service. WHAT WESTCO DOES We set your next service on whichever comes first: time, miles or hours. STORAGE Should I change the oil before or after storing my RV? Changing it before storage is usually the better choice, since used oil carries acids and moisture that sit on engine parts the whole time. GOOD TO KNOW An RV that sits for months can also develop dry-rotted belts, weak batteries, and mouse damage to wiring or air intakes. The first start after storage is when those problems surface. WHAT WESTCO DOES We inspect belts, hoses and fluid levels along with the oil change and look for leaks and critter damage under the hood. Colorado Springs: RVs here often go from summer camping into a long winter of storage. A fall oil change means fresh oil through the cold months. ENGINES Do you service big-block gas RVs and diesel pushers? Yes. We service the chassis engines in gas Class A and Class C coaches and in diesel pushers. GOOD TO KNOW Big gas V8 and V10 engines in motorhome chassis work harder than the same engines in a pickup. Diesel pushers have large oil capacities and filters that can be hard to reach. Both need the correct oil spec and a careful check for leaks. WHAT WESTCO DOES We handle the chassis engine and its fluids. House systems like the coach generator are separate. RV REPAIR → FLEETS HOW DO YOU KEEP A FLEET'S OIL CHANGES ON TRACK? By putting every vehicle on a preventive maintenance schedule based on how it's used, and keeping records you can check. Downtime costs more than the oil change does. SCHEDULING How do you schedule fleet oil changes? By miles, engine hours or idle hours, depending on the vehicle and how it works. THREE WAYS TO SCHEDULE Miles: right for most highway vans and pickups. Engine hours: better for trucks that run equipment or spend a lot of time running while parked. Idle hours: idling adds engine wear with no miles to show for it. Many manufacturers count idle time toward service intervals. WHAT WESTCO DOES We work with you to set intervals for each vehicle type in your fleet, including gas, diesel, Sprinter, Isuzu NPR and heavy-duty pickups. RECORDS Can you keep track of service for my whole fleet? Yes. Every service is documented with the date, mileage or hours, what was done, and what we found. GOOD TO KNOW Good records help with warranty claims, resale value, compliance and budgeting. They also show patterns, like one vehicle using oil or one truck wearing brakes early. WHAT WESTCO DOES You get a digital report with photos after each visit, so you can see what we saw and plan repairs before they become breakdowns. FLEET SERVICE → OIL CHANGE FAQ OIL CHANGE QUESTIONS WE HEAR MOST OIL TYPE Do I need synthetic oil? If your owner's manual or oil approval calls for it, yes. Most newer engines effectively require it. GOOD TO KNOW Oils that meet specs like dexos1 Gen 3, European approvals, or 0W grades are almost always synthetic. Synthetic handles heat better and flows better in the cold. Some older engines are fine on conventional or synthetic blend oil. WHAT WESTCO DOES We'll tell you what your engine requires and what the options are if it doesn't require synthetic. WARRANTY Will I void my warranty if I don't get my oil changed at the dealer? No. The Federal Trade Commission says it's illegal for a dealer to deny warranty coverage because routine maintenance was done somewhere else. WHAT TO KNOW The law: the federal Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act protects your right to choose who maintains your vehicle. What still matters: use oil and filters that meet your manufacturer's spec, follow the schedule, and keep records. Exception: if the warranty provides the maintenance free, the dealer can require it be done there. WHAT WESTCO DOES Every Westco oil change is documented with the date, mileage and oil spec, so your records are ready if you ever need them. OIL USE Is it normal for my engine to use oil between changes? Some oil use is normal, and manufacturers publish their own limits. A sudden increase is worth a look. GOOD TO KNOW Leaks, worn piston rings, valve seals, a failing PCV system, or turbo seals can all raise oil use. Running an engine low on oil is hard on it. WHAT WESTCO DOES We check your oil level at every visit and note changes over time. If use increases, we'll find the cause. Follow your vehicle maker’s interval or the oil life monitor. Towing, short trips, dusty roads and idling shorten it. When to change it Oil life monitor low · Towing · Lots of short trips · Dark, thick oil What we do We look up the interval for your engine and set a reminder based on how you drive. Colorado Springs: Dusty dirt roads and mountain towing count as severe service. Change the oil sooner. DO I NEED SYNTHETIC OIL? Many newer engines require full synthetic, and using the wrong oil can affect warranty and engine life. Older engines may run fine on conventional or a blend. Signs you need it Turbocharged engine · Newer vehicle · Maker calls for it · Towing or heat What we do We use the oil type and grade your engine is built for, checked against the maker’s specification. Colorado Springs: Climbing and towing work a turbo hard. Use the oil grade the maker specifies. WHY IS MY ENGINE LOW ON OIL BETWEEN CHANGES? Some engines use a little oil by design. More than that points to a leak or internal wear. Warning signs Low oil light · Oil spots on the driveway · Burning smell · Blue smoke What we do We check for leaks at every oil change and can run an oil consumption test if it keeps happening. Warning signs Low coolant warning · Sweet smell · Overheating What we do We pressure-test the cooling system and replace the failed pipe, pump or housing. Colorado Springs: Don't drive a Jaguar that's overheating — aluminum engines don't forgive it. Why does my Jaguar V8 rattle on startup? On many 5.0L Jaguar V8s from around 2010–2013, a startup rattle is worn timing chain tensioners and guides. Warning signs Startup rattle · Cam timing codes · Rough idle What we do We confirm it and replace the timing components as one job before they fail. Why is my Jaguar XJ sitting low? XJ air suspension fails as the air springs leak or the compressor wears out. Warning signs One corner low · Suspension warning · Compressor running constantly What we do We pressure-test the system and replace only the failed part. These are the ones that come through our bays. Find your engine to see what it’s in, what it does when it’s failing, and how we handle it. FORD What goes wrong with the Ford 3.5L EcoBoost? The 3.5L EcoBoost is a strong engine with a timing problem. Early engines stretch timing chains, and later ones wear out cam phasers. FOUND IN F-150 (2011 on), Expedition, Navigator, Explorer Sport, Flex, Taurus SHO. WHAT OWNERS NOTICE, AND WHY Rattle at start-up and cam timing codes (2011–2016): timing chain, guide and tensioner wear. Old oil makes it worse. A 2–5 second rattle on a cold start after sitting overnight (2017–2020): worn cam phasers. Ford released a bulletin to replace all four phasers on engines built through October 2019. Stumble or misfire on hard acceleration after highway driving in wet weather (2011–2012): condensation in the intercooler. Ford has a software and air-deflector fix. WHAT WESTCO DOES Timing chain and phaser replacement, bulletin lookups by VIN, and oil service on schedule. FORD What goes wrong with the Ford 5.4L 3-valve? The 5.4L 3-valve has two known problems: spark plugs that break during removal, and cam phaser noise. FOUND IN F-150 (2004–2010), Super Duty (2005–2010), Expedition and Navigator (2005–2014). WHAT OWNERS NOTICE, AND WHY Plugs that break off during a tune-up: a two-piece plug that seizes with carbon, on engines built before October 2007. It needs Ford’s extraction procedure. Ticking or knocking at a hot idle, often with cam timing codes: worn cam phasers or a sticking cam timing solenoid, plus timing chain guide wear. Low or dirty oil is the usual trigger. WHAT WESTCO DOES Plug removal to Ford’s procedure, and cam phaser and timing chain repair. FORD What goes wrong with the Ford 1.5L and 1.6L EcoBoost? These small EcoBoost engines can leak coolant into the cylinders. Ford has acknowledged the problem on some vehicles. FOUND IN Escape, Fusion (1.5L and 1.6L), Fiesta ST, Transit Connect (1.6L). WHAT OWNERS NOTICE, AND WHY Low coolant, white exhaust smoke and misfires (1.5L, 2017–2019 Escape and Fusion): coolant leaking into a cylinder. Ford runs a program that covers the short block for 7 years / 84,000 miles on covered vehicles. Overheating (1.6L, 2013–2015): low coolant lets the head overheat and crack. These vehicles have safety recalls. WHAT WESTCO DOES Coolant-loss diagnosis and pressure testing, recall and program checks by VIN, and engine repair or replacement. GM What goes wrong with the GM 5.3L and 6.2L V8? The most common failure is a collapsed lifter in the cylinder deactivation system (AFM or DFM). We also do the permanent fix. FOUND IN Silverado and Sierra 1500, Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon, Escalade. WHAT OWNERS NOTICE, AND WHY Ticking, then a misfire on one cylinder: a deactivation lifter sticks or collapses and often damages the camshaft. WHAT WESTCO DOES Lifter and camshaft repair, and the permanent AFM/DFM delete: a hardware conversion plus a computer reprogram to match. AFM is a fuel-economy system, not emissions equipment. Also check: 2021–2024 trucks and SUVs with the 6.2L are under a GM recall for connecting rod and crankshaft defects. That’s a bearing problem, not a lifter one. We check recall status by VIN. GM What goes wrong with the GM 3.6L V6? The 3.6L V6 is known for timing chain stretch, especially in 2007–2012 models. FOUND IN Traverse, Acadia, Enclave, Outlook, Equinox, CTS, SRX, Camaro and more. WHAT OWNERS NOTICE, AND WHY Check engine light with cam timing codes, rattle, rough running: stretched timing chains. Long oil change intervals and low oil speed it up. WHAT WESTCO DOES Timing chain replacement, and oil level and interval advice to keep it from coming back. GM What goes wrong with the GM 2.4L Ecotec? The 2.4L four-cylinder is known for burning oil. GM acknowledged it on many vehicles. FOUND IN Equinox and Terrain (2010–2013), Malibu, Regal, LaCrosse, Captiva. WHAT OWNERS NOTICE, AND WHY Adding oil between changes, low oil pressure warning, fouled plugs: stuck piston rings. GM issued special coverage for piston replacement on some models. WHAT WESTCO DOES Oil consumption testing, coverage checks, and engine repair or replacement. CHRYSLER · DODGE · RAM · JEEP What is the Hemi tick on a 5.7L? The “Hemi tick” is a lifter failure. A roller in a lifter seizes and wears down the camshaft. FOUND IN Ram 1500, Durango, Grand Cherokee, Charger, Challenger, 300. Most reported on 2009–2016 models. WHAT OWNERS NOTICE, AND WHY A tick that doesn’t go away when warm, a misfire on one cylinder: a failed lifter roller and a worn cam lobe. It happens with and without the cylinder deactivation system. WHAT WESTCO DOES Lifter and camshaft replacement, with the oil checked for metal before and after. CHRYSLER · DODGE · RAM · JEEP What goes wrong with the Chrysler 3.6L Pentastar? The Pentastar V6 has three known issues: the oil filter housing, the rocker arms, and the left cylinder head on early engines. FOUND IN Wrangler, Grand Cherokee, Durango, Ram 1500, Charger, 300, Challenger, Pacifica, Grand Caravan and more (2011 on). WHAT OWNERS NOTICE, AND WHY Oil or coolant leak at the back of the engine: the plastic oil filter housing and cooler crack. Ticking and a misfire on one cylinder: rocker arm bearing failure and lifter wear. Tick and misfire on the left bank (some 2011–2013): valve seat wear in the left head. Chrysler extended coverage on affected engines. WHAT WESTCO DOES Oil filter housing replacement, valvetrain repair, and coverage checks by VIN. HYUNDAI · KIA What goes wrong with the Hyundai and Kia 2.0T and 2.4L engines? These engines can fail connecting rod bearings. Hyundai and Kia recalled them and added a lifetime warranty on the affected parts for many vehicles. FOUND IN Sonata, Optima, Sportage, Sorento, Santa Fe Sport, Tucson (about 2011–2019). WHAT OWNERS NOTICE, AND WHY Knocking, stalling, oil light, metal in the oil: machining debris starves the rod bearings until they spin. WHAT WESTCO DOES Diagnosis and documentation, and a check of recall and lifetime-warranty status. If it’s covered, we’ll tell you where it needs to go. WARRANTY CLAIMS → SUBARU What goes wrong with the Subaru 2.5L? Older Subaru 2.5L engines are known for head gasket leaks. Newer ones are known for burning oil. FOUND IN Forester, Outback, Legacy, Impreza, Baja. WHAT OWNERS NOTICE, AND WHY Slow coolant loss, sweet smell, oil and coolant seeping at the head (about 1999–2011): the original head gaskets leak with age. They’re replaced with multi-layer steel gaskets. Overheating and bubbles in the coolant (about 1996–1999): internal head gasket failure. Burning oil (newer engine, about 2011–2015): a different problem. Subaru extended coverage on some models. WHAT WESTCO DOES Head gasket replacement with the heads checked flat before reassembly, plus cooling system repair. TOYOTA Why does my Toyota 2.4L burn oil? The 2.4L four-cylinder (2AZ-FE) is known for burning oil from stuck piston rings. Toyota acknowledged it on many models. FOUND IN Camry, Solara, RAV4, Corolla and Matrix (2.4L), Scion tC and xB (about 2006–2015). WHAT OWNERS NOTICE, AND WHY Adding oil between changes, blue smoke: piston rings stuck by carbon. WHAT WESTCO DOES Oil consumption testing and engine repair or replacement. HONDA What goes wrong with the Honda 3.5L V6? The 3.5L V6 with cylinder deactivation (VCM) is known for fouled plugs, oil use and worn engine mounts. FOUND IN Accord V6, Odyssey, Pilot, Crosstour (about 2008–2013). WHAT OWNERS NOTICE, AND WHY Misfire and fouled plugs, often on the rear bank: oil fouling from cylinder deactivation. Vibration or shudder at idle: worn engine mounts. WHAT WESTCO DOES Misfire diagnosis, plug and engine mount replacement, and oil consumption testing. VW · AUDI What goes wrong with the VW and Audi 2.0T? Earlier 2.0T engines (about 2008–2014) can fail the timing chain tensioner. When it lets go, the chain jumps and the engine is damaged. FOUND IN GTI, Jetta, Passat, CC, Tiguan, Eos, Beetle, Audi A3, A4, A5, Q5, TT. WHAT OWNERS NOTICE, AND WHY A rattle for a second at start-up: the warning sign. Don’t ignore it. WHAT WESTCO DOES Timing chain and tensioner replacement before it fails, and module programming with our factory-level tool. VW SERVICE → AUDI SERVICE → BMW What goes wrong with BMW N20, N54 and N55 engines? The N20 four-cylinder is known for timing chain guide failure. The N54 and N55 six-cylinders are known for oil leaks. WHAT OWNERS NOTICE, AND WHY N20 (about 2012–2015 328i, 428i, 528i, X1, X3, Z4, 228i): a whine from the front of the engine is plastic timing chain guides breaking down. Left alone, the chain jumps. N54 and N55 (335i, 135i, 535i, X models): oil smell or smoke from leaks at the oil filter housing gasket, valve cover and oil pan. N54 only: long cranking or limp mode from high-pressure fuel pump failure, and a rattle off-throttle from wastegate wear. BMW extended coverage on both for some years. WHAT WESTCO DOES Timing chain and guide replacement, oil leak repair, and module programming. BMW SERVICE → MERCEDES-BENZ What goes wrong with the Mercedes V6 and V8 (M272, M273)? Some 2005–2008 Mercedes V6 and V8 engines wear a timing gear. Cam timing drifts until the check engine light comes on. FOUND IN C, E, CLK, ML, R, GL, S and SLK models built before the 2008 fix. WHAT OWNERS NOTICE, AND WHY Check engine light with cam timing codes, rough running: worn balance shaft gear (V6) or idler gear (V8). FLEET ENGINES ENGINE REPAIR FOR FLEETS A truck in the bay isn’t earning. We diagnose before we tear down, so the repair is right the first time and the truck goes back to work. The engines fleets run most WHAT GOES WRONG Ford 6.8L V10 and 7.3L gas (Super Duty and E-Series work trucks): plug breakage on 3-valve V10s, and lifter wear reported on 2020–2023 7.3L engines. Ford Transit 3.5L and EcoBoost: timing chains and cam phasers. Chevy Express and GMC Savana 6.0L and 6.6L: exhaust manifold bolts and misfires. Isuzu NPR, Power Stroke, Duramax and Sprinter diesels: see the diesel cards above. What wears out fleet engines THE BIG THREE Idle hours: a truck that idles all day racks up engine wear the odometer doesn’t show. Short runs: diesels that never get hot enough to clean their particulate filter. Stretched oil intervals: the number one cause of the timing chain and lifter failures on this page. How we keep fleets moving Priority scheduling, dealer-level diagnostics, factory module programming in-house, DOT inspections in-house, and photo reports you can approve from the office. FLEET SERVICE → TEST FIRST · REPAIR OR REPLACE HOW WE FIND THE REAL PROBLEM How we find the real problem THE TESTS Scan and live data: codes are a starting point. Live data shows what the engine is doing right now. Compression test: measures how well each cylinder seals. A low cylinder points to valves, rings or a head gasket. Leak-down test: pressurizes each cylinder and listens for where the air escapes: intake, exhaust, crankcase or cooling system. Combustion gas test: checks the coolant for exhaust gas, the clearest sign of a head gasket or cracked head. Cooling system pressure test: finds leaks that only show under pressure. Borescope camera: looks inside the cylinder without taking the engine apart. Oil consumption test: measures exactly how much oil the engine uses over a set number of miles. Repair or replace your engine? We repair engines and we replace engines. We don’t rebuild them. After testing, we lay out the options plainly: YOUR OPTIONS Repair when the damage is contained: a head gasket, a timing chain, lifters, leaks. Replace with a used or remanufactured engine when the block, crank or bearings are damaged, or when the repair would cost more than a replacement. Let it go when the vehicle isn’t worth either. We’ll tell you that too. Every repair and replacement is covered by our 24-month / 24,000-mile warranty. We scan it, inspect for leaks and noises, and give you a plain-English answer. Prefer the phone? Call (719) 591-7743. ENGINE QUESTIONS WE ANSWER EVERY WEEK Straight answers from our techs IS IT SAFE TO DRIVE WITH MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON? A steady light usually means something needs attention soon. A flashing light means an active misfire that can damage the catalytic converter. Pull over safely and call us. Warning signs Steady light · Flashing light · Rough running · Loss of power What we do We read the codes, study live data and test the part before recommending a repair, so you replace what actually failed. Colorado Springs: Cold mornings and thin air are hard on weak ignition parts. A misfire that shows up in winter is worth a scan. WHAT ARE THE SIGNS OF A BLOWN HEAD GASKET? Overheating, white smoke from the exhaust, milky oil or coolant that keeps disappearing can all point to a head gasket. Other problems cause some of the same symptoms, so it has to be tested. Warning signs Overheating · White exhaust smoke · Milky oil · Coolant loss What we do We pressure-test the cooling system and check for combustion gases before anything comes apart. Colorado Springs: Climbing Ute Pass or towing up I-25 is when a weak cooling system shows itself. Watch the temperature gauge. WHEN SHOULD MY TIMING BELT BE REPLACED? At the interval your vehicle maker sets. On many engines a broken belt lets the valves hit the pistons, which turns a maintenance job into an engine job. Warning signs High miles on the original belt · Squeal or tick from the front · Oil leaks near the belt What we do We look up the interval for your exact engine and replace the belt, tensioner and related parts together. WHY DOES MY ENGINE RATTLE ON A COLD START? A rattle in the first few seconds after a cold start often points to timing chain stretch or a tensioner that is not holding oil pressure. Low oil can make it worse. Warning signs Rattle on startup · Cam timing codes · Check engine light · Rough idle What we do We check oil level and condition first, then find the exact source before quoting a repair. MY ENGINE IS BURNING OIL. WHAT NOW? Some engines use oil because of worn rings or valve seals, others because of a leak onto a hot exhaust. The fix depends on which one it is. Warning signs Adding oil between changes · Low oil warning · Blue smoke · Burning smell What we do An oil consumption test measures how fast it uses oil. Then we explain the options, from monitoring it to repair. Colorado Springs: Low oil makes timing chains louder. Check your level before a mountain trip. NOT SURE WHAT YOUR ENGINE IS DOING?
