What goes wrong on a Toyota?

Less than on most things, which is why people buy them. The items worth knowing are specific rather than general, and most are tied to a particular engine rather than to Toyota as a whole.

Oil consumption on the 2.4 four cylinder

From what we have read on these, the 2AZ-FE four cylinder used in Camry and RAV4 through roughly the end of the 2000s can start using oil between changes. The mechanism most often described is the piston rings losing their ability to scrape oil off the cylinder wall, so it passes into the combustion chamber and gets burned.

The practical version for an owner is simple: check the oil on these, and do not assume a car that never needed topping up at 60,000 miles will behave the same at 150,000.

Water pumps and the VVT-i oil line

Water pumps on the 3.5 V6 are a wear item and usually announce themselves with a weep or a noise before they strand anybody. On some earlier 4.7 V8 trucks there is an oil feed line to the variable valve timing system that was originally partly rubber; a failure there dumps oil quickly, and a metal replacement line is the durable fix.

That is a good example of when an aftermarket part earns its place: it removes the failure rather than replacing a worn copy of it.

Frame corrosion on older trucks

On older Tacoma and Tundra, frame rust has been a real issue and has been the subject of manufacturer programs. In Colorado we see less of it than the salt belt, but trucks move, and a truck that spent its first decade somewhere wetter can arrive here with a frame that needs looking at from underneath.

That is a lift inspection, not something you can judge from the driver's seat.
