The cold start rattle

If your MINI rattles for a second or two on a cold start, that is the noise everybody means when they talk about these. On the turbocharged four cylinders from roughly 2007 through the mid 2010s, the timing chain tensioner is the part usually blamed: it takes up slack in the chain, and when it is slow to pressurise the chain slaps against its guides.

Based on our reading, the tensioner was revised during the run. What matters is whether the noise is there, not the year on the badge, and a rattle that is getting longer is telling you something.

Carbon buildup

These are direct injected, which means fuel never washes the back of the intake valve, and carbon accumulates there over time. It shows up as a rough idle, a misfire under load, or a car that just feels flat.

It is a cleaning job on a schedule rather than a breakdown, and it is far cheaper handled early.

Cooling and oil leaks

Going off what comes across our lift, the thermostat housing and water pump are common on these, and oil leaks from the valve cover gasket and the oil filter housing gasket are close to routine at higher mileage. Oil dripping onto a hot exhaust is a smell before it is a problem.

A good gasket for this kind of job is one bonded to a rigid carrier, because the frame limits how far it can crush and stops it shifting as it goes in.
