The engine question people are really asking

Most Kia calls we get are about the engine, and specifically about the 2.0 and 2.4 litre Theta family. This has been the subject of extensive manufacturer recalls, extended warranties and a legal settlement, so it is not a rumour and it is not something a shop needs to talk you into taking seriously.

What actually fails

The mechanism most often described is the connecting rod bearings. The bearing is a thin shell between the rod and the crankshaft, and when its oil film breaks down it wears, then knocks, then eventually lets go. The classic description from owners is a knocking noise that increases with engine speed, sometimes with the oil light flickering at idle.

A knock like that is not a noise to drive on. If your car is doing it, the useful next step is finding out whether it is still covered rather than paying for an engine that somebody else may owe you.

Check your coverage before you spend

Because of the recalls and the settlement, coverage on these has been broader and longer than a normal warranty, and it depends on the exact engine, year and model. That is worth establishing before any money changes hands.
