Carbon buildup on direct injection engines
On the Skyactiv engines, fuel is sprayed straight into the cylinder rather than onto the back of the intake valve. That is good for efficiency, but it means the valve never gets washed by fuel, and over time oil vapour drawn through the crankcase ventilation system bakes onto the valve as carbon.
The symptoms owners describe are a rough idle, a misfire, hesitation, or just a car that feels slower than it did. It is a cleaning job rather than a failure, and it is one of those things that is far cheaper to address at the first sign than to ignore.
The 2.5 turbo
On the turbocharged 2.5, the turbo lives on hot exhaust gas and depends entirely on clean oil arriving on time. Oil changes on interval are not a nicety on a turbo engine; the oil is doing cooling work as well as lubrication.
Based on our reading, most turbo trouble on modern engines starts as an oil supply or oil condition problem rather than a fault in the turbo itself.
Higher mileage items
Going off what we see, the usual items on higher mileage Mazdas are suspension bushings and mounts, ignition coils, and the ordinary maintenance that gets deferred. None of it is dramatic, and most of it is visible on a lift before it becomes a complaint.
A car that has been looked after will show it. That is worth more than the year on the title.
