Lexus is Toyota with more to go wrong electrically

Mechanically these share a great deal with Toyota, which is why they last. What tends to bring them in is the extra equipment: the air suspension, the screens, the comfort systems, and the seals that age on a car people keep for fifteen years.

The VVT-i oil line

On some of the 4.7 V8 models there is an oil feed line to the variable valve timing system that was originally built with a rubber section. When that section fails it loses oil fast and with very little warning. A full metal replacement line removes the failure point rather than restarting the clock on it.

This is one of the few places where we will say plainly that a different part is better than the one that was fitted, and the reason is that the original design is the failure.

Water pumps and cooling

Water pumps on the V6 and V8 engines are a wear item, and on these they usually weep before they fail outright. In Colorado, cooling systems work harder than people expect, especially on anything that tows or climbs regularly.

Coolant condition is worth checking as a matter of course rather than waiting for a temperature gauge to say something.

Interior and electrical age items

On some models from the late 2000s and early 2010s, dashboard material degradation has been widely reported and was the subject of manufacturer programs. Beyond that it is the usual ageing electrical items on a car with a lot of equipment in it.

None of it stops the car. All of it affects what the car is worth and what it is like to own.
