Every diesel family has its known weak spots. Whether your truck has one of them takes a real inspection — these are patterns, not a diagnosis. FORD 6.0L Power Stroke, 2003–2007 • The oil cooler clogs first and starves the EGR cooler • A cracked EGR cooler leaks coolant — often with no puddle • Pressure can then push the head gaskets • We fix the whole chain and use head studs when the heads come off FORD 6.7L & 6.4L Power Stroke, 2008 and newer • 6.7L: CP4-style high-pressure fuel pump — clean fuel and filters are the best protection • 6.4L: radiator leaks, fuel dilution and expensive repairs • We tell you honestly what we find FORD 7.3L Power Stroke, 1994–2003 • Usually a durable engine • Camshaft position sensor — sudden no-start or misfire • Harness under the valve covers — intermittent misfire GM LB7 & LLY Duramax, 2001–2005 • LB7: injectors under the valve covers — hard hot starts, smoke at idle, fuel in the oil • A return-fuel test can find a leaking injector before anything comes apart • LLY: runs hot under load, especially towing GM LML Duramax, 2011–2016 • CP4-style high-pressure fuel pump • Water, air or low supply pressure can wear it • A failed pump can send metal through injectors, rails and lines RAM 6.7L CUMMINS Cummins, 2007.5 and newer • Intake grid heater bolt can loosen and drop into the engine • Checking and securing it is a quick job at routine service • Some Ram diesels also use the CP4-style pump RAM 5.9L CUMMINS Cummins, 1989–2007 • 24-valve (1998–2002): VP44 injection pump — heat and low supply pressure are hard on it • 12-valve: the timing cover dowel pin can back out • A healthy lift pump and good fuel pressure help it last Keep it healthy What we tell diesel owners • Change fuel filters and drain the water separator • Never ignore the water-in-fuel light • Let the turbo cool after hard towing • Get it on the highway so it can regenerate DIESEL QUESTIONS WE ANSWER EVERY WEEK Straight answers from our techs WHAT DIESELS DO YOU WORK ON? Ford Power Stroke 7.3L, 6.0L, 6.4L and 6.7L; GM Duramax LB7, LLY, LBZ, LMM, LML and L5P; Ram Cummins 5.9L and 6.7L; Isuzu NPR gas and diesel; Mercedes Sprinter vans; and diesel motorhomes and fleet trucks. WE SEE Daily drivers · Hot-shot haulers · Construction fleets · RV owners What we do Customers come from Colorado Springs, Fountain, Security-Widefield, Monument, Manitou Springs, Pueblo, Fort Carson and Peterson SFB. Colorado Springs: Altitude, long grades and cold mornings add their own load. We service diesels with that in mind. HOW DOES WESTCO DIAGNOSE A DIESEL? We start with factory-level scan tools for Ford, GM and Cummins, then test before we replace anything: fuel pressure, injector balance, compression, crankcase pressure and cooling system pressure, depending on the complaint. WE TEST Fuel pressure · Injector balance · Crankcase pressure · Cooling system What we do You see what we found — photos and data — and you approve the work before we start. Colorado Springs: Not sure what is wrong? Describe it when you book. We diagnose before we repair. DO YOU DELETE EMISSIONS EQUIPMENT? No. Westco does not remove or disable EGR, DPF, DEF/SCR or catalyst systems. We diagnose why they are failing and repair them. COMMON ROOT CAUSES Injectors · Sensors · Short-trip driving · Missed regenerations What we do Shopping a truck that has already been deleted? We tell you what we see and what it can mean for registration, emissions testing and resale. We’re not lawyers, so confirm the legal side with the state. DO YOU WORK ON FLEETS AND DO DOT INSPECTIONS? Yes. We maintain diesel pickups, vans, box trucks and Isuzu NPRs for local businesses, and we perform DOT annual inspections in-house. FLEET WORK Scheduled maintenance · DOT annual inspections · Box trucks and NPRs · Work vans What we do See our Fleet Service page for how we keep work trucks on the road. CAN YOU HANDLE MY EXTENDED WARRANTY CLAIM? Yes. We take down what the truck is doing, verify coverage with your provider by VIN and name, diagnose it, submit the claim, then go over the approval with you before any repair starts. HOW IT WORKS Your complaint · Coverage check · Diagnosis and claim · Approval, then repair What we do You know what is covered and what is not before we pick up a wrench. Colorado Springs: Bring your warranty paperwork or contract number when you book. CAN YOU INSPECT A USED DIESEL BEFORE I BUY IT? Yes. Our pre-purchase diesel inspection can include a relative compression test, injector balance test, fuel supply pressure test, crankcase pressure check, DPF soot load and regeneration history, and a turbo shaft play check. WE ALSO CHECK Grid heater bolt on 6.7L Cummins · Cooling system pressure · Codes in every module · Turbo shaft play · Service history What we do You get photos and test results, so you know exactly what you are buying before you commit. WHAT IS THE CP4 FUEL PUMP PROBLEM? The Ford 6.7L, GM LML Duramax and some Ram diesels use a CP4-style high-pressure fuel pump that is lubricated by the fuel itself. Water, air or low supply pressure can wear it, and a bad failure can send metal through the injectors, rails and lines. BEST PROTECTION Clean fuel · Filters on schedule · Healthy supply pressure · Drain the water separator What we do We can talk through prevention options for your truck at your next service. WHY IS MY 6.0L POWER STROKE LOSING COOLANT? On many 6.0L trucks the oil cooler clogs first. That starves the EGR cooler of coolant flow, the EGR cooler can crack and leak coolant, and a pressurized cooling system can eventually push head gaskets. WARNING SIGNS Coolant loss, no puddle · White smoke · Residue at the degas cap · Rising oil temps What we do We fix the chain from the start — oil cooler, EGR cooler, coolant — and use head studs when the heads come off. HOW CAN I MAKE MY DIESEL LAST LONGER? Let it idle a minute or two before driving, especially when cold. After hard towing, let the turbo cool before shutting down. Change fuel filters on schedule and never ignore the water-in-fuel light. ALSO Highway runs to regenerate · Don’t run the tank low · Quality filters · Drain the separator WHAT WE DO We set a service schedule that fits how you actually use the truck — daily driving, towing or fleet work. NOT SURE WHAT’S WRONG WITH YOUR DIESEL? Tell us what it's doing when you book. We diagnose before we repair, and you approve the work before we start. GM 5.3L and 6.2L V8s with Active or Dynamic Fuel Management shut off cylinders to save fuel. The lifters that do it can collapse and wipe the camshaft lobes. It starts as a tick and ends as a knock. Warning signs Tick at idle · Misfire codes · Check engine light · Oil a quart low What we do We confirm it before anything comes apart. Then we repair the lifters, or do the permanent fix — converting the hardware and reprogramming the computer to match. Colorado Springs: Towing up the pass on a ticking engine is how a lifter repair becomes an engine replacement. Get it checked early. HOW OFTEN DO BRAKES NEED REPLACING? It depends on the vehicle and how it is driven. Heavy trucks, towing and mountain grades wear brakes faster, so we measure the pads and check the rotors at every visit and tell you what is left. Warning signs Squealing · Grinding · Wheel shake when braking · Brake warning light What we do We inspect pads, rotors, calipers, hardware and fluid, and use OEM or high-quality equivalent parts. Brake fluid should be flushed about every two years. Colorado Springs: Coming down Ute Pass or Monument Hill? Use a lower gear and let the engine help save your brakes. WHY IS MY HEMI TICKING? The 5.7L HEMI in Ram, Jeep, Dodge and Chrysler has two common ticks. Broken exhaust manifold bolts tick loudest on a cold start and fade as it warms. A failing lifter and camshaft — the “HEMI tick” — does not fade. Warning signs Tick on cold start · Tick that stays warm · Exhaust smell · Misfire codes What we do We listen cold and warm, check the manifolds and scan for misfires, so you know which one you have before any money is spent. WHY DOES MY ENGINE RATTLE ON A COLD START? A rattle for the first few seconds after a cold start usually points to timing parts — cam phasers and tensioners on the Ford 5.4L 3-valve, timing chain stretch on the 3.5L EcoBoost and GM 3.6L V6. Warning signs Rattle on startup · Cam correlation codes · Check engine light · Rough idle What we do We check oil level and condition first, then find the exact source before replacing anything. WHY DOES MY TRUCK SHUDDER AT A STEADY SPEED? On many GM trucks and SUVs with the 8-speed automatic, a shudder that feels like driving over rumble strips at steady speed usually comes from the torque converter. WARNING SIGNS Rumble-strip feel · Shudder at 30–50 mph · Harsh shifts · Transmission light What we do We road-test it, scan the transmission and check the fluid, then tell you whether it is a fluid service or a converter repair. Colorado Springs: Towing a trailer up I-25? A transmission that shudders empty will shudder worse loaded. WHAT IS JEEP DEATH WOBBLE? Death wobble is a violent shake in the front end of a Wrangler or Gladiator after hitting a bump at speed. It traces to worn steering and suspension parts, and it can be fixed — but it is not a five-minute job. COMMON CAUSES Track bar · Ball joints · Tie rod ends · Steering stabilizer · Worn bushings What we do We check every joint in the front end on a lift and fix the worn parts, not just the stabilizer that hides the symptom. WHY WON’T MY FORD SPARK PLUGS COME OUT? The 2004–2008 Ford 5.4L 3-valve uses a two-piece spark plug that often breaks during removal, leaving part of the plug in the head. Warning signs Original plugs at high miles · Misfire · Rough idle · Broken plug from another shop What we do We use the proper extraction procedure and tools to remove broken plugs without pulling the head. WHAT SHOULD I CHECK BEFORE BUYING A USED TRUCK? Get a pre-purchase inspection. Every brand has specific years and engines with expensive repair traps, and a seller who refuses an inspection is hiding something. WHAT WE CHECK Cold-start tick or rattle · Front-end play · Transfer case fluid · Service history What we do We put it on a lift, scan every module for codes and photograph everything we find — so you know exactly what you are buying before you commit. WHY IS MY TRUCK BURNING OIL? The 2010–2014 GM 5.3L with Active Fuel Management is known for it, and some Ford 5.0L Coyote engines use oil too. Piston rings that stick with carbon and stop sealing are a common cause. Warning signs Adding oil every 500–1,000 miles · Low oil warning · Exhaust smoke · Power dropping off What we do An oil consumption test measures how fast it's using oil. The fix ranges from an engine cleaning procedure to ring replacement. Don't just keep adding oil — it can ruin the catalytic converter. NOT SURE WHAT’S WRONG WITH YOUR CAR OR TRUCK? Some 2013–2019 Escapes and Fusions with the 1.5L or 1.6L EcoBoost can lose coolant and overheat — some are covered by recalls or extended warranties. Warning signs Low coolant warning · Overheating · White smoke What we do We pressure-test the cooling system and check your VIN for recalls before recommending a repair. Colorado Springs: Don't keep driving a turbo engine that's overheating. Why is my Explorer's coolant disappearing? On Explorers, Edges and Flexes with the 3.5L V6, the water pump is inside the engine and driven by the timing chain. When it leaks, coolant can go into the oil. Warning signs Coolant loss with no puddle · Milky oil · Overheating What we do We test for internal leakage and replace the pump with the timing components when needed. Why does my Ford Focus shudder from a stop? 2012–2016 Focus and Fiesta models with the PowerShift dual-clutch are known for shudder, slipping and hesitation. Warning signs Shudder from a stop · Hesitation · Slipping What we do We diagnose the clutch and module and check for software updates and coverage. Why does my Ford rattle on a cold start? A brief rattle on a cold start on many Ford V8s and EcoBoost engines points to cam phasers or timing chain wear. Warning signs Cold-start rattle · Ticking · Cam timing codes What we do We confirm it and replace the timing components as one job. Do you work on Ford trucks and diesels? Find your engine below to see what it’s in, what commonly goes wrong, and how we handle it. Not sure which engine you have? Check the chassis, not the coach brand. The chassis maker and model are on the sticker in the driver’s door jamb, and a diesel’s engine data plate is on the engine itself. GAS Ford V10 · Ford 7.3L · Chevy Express 6.0L/6.6L · Ford Transit · Ram ProMaster · Workhorse 8.1L · Ford 460 · Chevy 454 DIESEL Cummins ISB 5.9/6.7 · Cummins ISC/ISL/L9 · Cummins ISX/X15 · CAT 3126/C7 · CAT C9/C13/C15 · Mercedes Sprinter · Ford Power Stroke Super C · International VT365/MaxxForce 7 GAS · FORD F-53 & E-SERIES What goes wrong with the Ford 6.8L V10 in a motorhome? The V10 is the most common gas motorhome engine on the road, and its best-known problems are spark plugs and exhaust manifold studs. Both are fixable, and a well-kept V10 will pull a heavy coach for a long time. FOUND IN Ford F-53 Class A chassis from about 1999 to 2019, and E-350/E-450 Class C cutaways from 1997 to 2019. Later F-53s use the 3-valve version. WHAT OWNERS NOTICE, AND WHY A loud “pop,” then ticking and a misfire: on earlier 2-valve engines a spark plug can blow out of the aluminum head. We repair the threads with a permanent insert instead of replacing the head. Plugs that break off during a tune-up: 3-valve engines use a two-piece plug that seizes with carbon. It takes Ford’s extraction procedure, not a bigger wrench. A tick at cold start that fades as it warms up: broken exhaust manifold studs or a cracked manifold. Very common on this engine. A misfire with no check-engine light: a failing ignition coil, often on the rear cylinders against the firewall. RV WEAR The V10 lives at high rpm on mountain grades and sits under a hot engine cover. Heavy fuel use and slowing on long climbs are normal for this engine, not a fault. WHAT WESTCO DOES Spark plugs done to Ford’s torque and procedure, manifold stud and manifold repair, coil and misfire diagnosis, and cooling and transmission service for towing and mountain driving. GAS · FORD F-53 & E-SERIES (NEWER) What should I know about the Ford 7.3L “Godzilla” gas engine in an RV? The 7.3L V8 replaced the V10 in Ford’s motorhome chassis, and so far its record is good. The one issue to watch is lifter noise at idle. FOUND IN F-53 Class A chassis from the 2020 chassis year (often sold as 2021 and newer coaches), and E-350/E-450 Class C cutaways from 2021 on, paired with Ford’s 10-speed transmission. WHAT OWNERS NOTICE, AND WHY Ticking or tapping at idle, sometimes followed by a misfire: roller lifter and camshaft damage has been reported, mostly on 2020–2021 engines. Low oil pressure at hot idle is the commonly cited cause, and Ford has released an idle-speed software update for some applications. RV WEAR Long idling, like running the dash A/C at a campsite, is the situation owners most often connect to the lifter issue. WHAT WESTCO DOES We listen for lifter noise and check the oil filter for metal before it turns into an engine replacement, check for the latest software updates, and service the oil to the correct spec. GAS · CHEVY EXPRESS / GMC SAVANA CUTAWAY What should I know about the Chevy Express 6.0L and 6.6L in a Class C? The Chevy Express and GMC Savana cutaway is the other common Class C chassis. It used the 6.0L V8 through 2020 and the 6.6L V8 from 2021. Both are tough engines, and most trouble comes from heat and weight. FOUND IN Express/Savana 3500 and 4500 cutaway Class C motorhomes. WHAT OWNERS NOTICE, AND WHY Rough idle or misfire: cracked exhaust manifolds or broken bolts, or a failed coil or plug in the tight engine cover. Ticking at cold start: lifter noise. Transmission running hot: a Class C loaded close to its maximum weight. WHAT WESTCO DOES Misfire and manifold repair, cooling and transmission service, and a weight and brake check before mountain trips. GAS · FORD TRANSIT CAMPER VANS What goes wrong with the Ford Transit engines in a Class B camper van? Transit-based camper vans use the 3.7L V6 (2015–2019), the 3.5L V6 (2020 on) or the 3.5L EcoBoost. The thing to watch is the timing chain, especially on the EcoBoost. WHAT OWNERS NOTICE, AND WHY A rattle at cold start and cam timing codes: a stretched timing chain or worn cam phasers, most commonly reported on the EcoBoost. EcoBoost stumbling in humid weather: condensation in the intercooler. WHAT WESTCO DOES Timing chain and phaser repair, intercooler diagnosis, and oil service on schedule. Colorado Springs: at our altitude the EcoBoost keeps its power better than a non-turbo engine, but turbo heat on long climbs is real. GAS · RAM PROMASTER CAMPER VANS What goes wrong with the Ram ProMaster 3.6L in a camper van? The ProMaster is the base for many Class B camper vans, and its 3.6L Pentastar V6 has one well-known weak spot: the plastic oil filter housing. FOUND IN Ram ProMaster 1500/2500/3500, 2014 on. WHAT OWNERS NOTICE, AND WHY Oil smell or a drip at the back of the engine: the oil filter housing and cooler crack. It often gets mistaken for a rear main seal, and coolant can leak with it. Ticking at cold start: rocker arm or lifter wear. Misfires: coils or plugs. WHAT WESTCO DOES Oil filter housing replacement, valvetrain diagnosis and repair, and brake and front-drive checks for a heavy van. GAS · WORKHORSE W-SERIES What goes wrong with the 8.1L Vortec in a Workhorse motorhome? The 8.1L big-block was GM’s engine in the Workhorse W-series motorhome chassis until GM stopped making it around 2009. The common problems are exhaust manifold bolts, oil use and the crank sensor. FOUND IN Workhorse W-series Class A chassis (W16–W24), early 2000s to about 2009, with the Allison 1000 transmission. WHAT OWNERS NOTICE, AND WHY Ticking or an exhaust leak, usually worse on the passenger side: broken exhaust manifold bolts. Stalling or a no-start when hot: a failed crankshaft position sensor. Burning oil: common on this engine, often around a quart every 1,000–1,500 miles. Misfires and oil leaks: fouled plugs and leaking intake gaskets. WHAT WESTCO DOES Manifold bolt extraction and repair, sensor and misfire diagnosis, Allison transmission service, and brake inspection and repair. Also check: Workhorse chassis had a major recall for sticking front brake calipers. We check recall status and brake condition when your coach is in. GAS · OLDER FORD MOTORHOMES What should I know about the Ford 460 in an older motorhome? The 7.5L 460 powered Ford motorhome chassis until the V10 took over in the late 1990s. We work on them, but every one is now more than 25 years old and parts are getting harder to find, so repairs can take longer while we track parts down. FOUND IN Ford Class A motorhome chassis through about 1998, and E-350 Class C cutaways through 1996, usually with the E4OD transmission. WHAT OWNERS NOTICE, AND WHY Ticking or an exhaust smell in the cab: cracked exhaust manifolds or broken studs. Stalling or hard restarts when hot, especially on grades: a weak fuel pump and heat-soaked fuel (vapor lock). Overheating on long climbs: a tired radiator or fan clutch. Transmission slipping or flaring: the E4OD overheating under heavy weight. WHAT WESTCO DOES Manifold, fuel system and cooling system repair, and transmission service. GAS · OLDER CHEVY / GMC MOTORHOMES What should I know about the Chevy 454 in an older motorhome? The 7.4L 454 powered Chevy and GMC P30 motorhome chassis through the 1990s. We work on them, but like the Ford 460, parts for engines this old are getting harder to find, so repairs can take longer. FOUND IN Chevrolet/GMC P30 Class A chassis, 1970s to late 1990s, with the TH400 or 4L80E transmission. Workhorse took over the P30 chassis around 1999. WHAT OWNERS NOTICE, AND WHY Stalling on hot days or grades: fuel boiling in the lines (vapor lock). Ticking at the exhaust: manifold leaks or broken bolts. Overheating: a small cooling system with a clogged radiator. Oil leaks and burning oil: age. WHAT WESTCO DOES Fuel line and fuel system replacement, cooling system repair, manifold work and general engine repair. Safety note: old rubber fuel lines on these chassis are a fire risk. We check them any time one of these is in. DIESEL · PUSHERS, SUPER C & SPRINTER DIESEL RV ENGINES Check the engine’s year, not the coach’s. Particulate filters (DPF) arrived for 2007 and DEF for 2010, and engine makers built engines ahead of each deadline. A “2008” coach can carry an older engine without a DPF, and a “2010” coach can carry a 2009 engine without DEF. The engine data plate tells you which you have, and that decides what service it needs. DIESEL · CUMMINS ISB 5.9 / 6.7 What goes wrong with the Cummins 6.7 (ISB) in a diesel pusher? The Cummins ISB is the most common engine in mid-size diesel pushers and Super C motorhomes. On 2007 and newer engines, most trouble comes from the emissions system, not the engine itself. FOUND IN Freightliner XC-series, Spartan and Workhorse pusher chassis, and Freightliner M2 Super C. The 5.9L ran until about 2006, the 6.7L from 2007 on. IS IT THE SAME AS A RAM 6.7? The same engine family, but not the same setup: different computer calibration, a rear radiator, an Allison transmission and commercial emissions timing. For Ram pickups, see our Cummins page. WHAT OWNERS NOTICE, AND WHY Frequent regens, derate, poor mileage (2007+): a loaded-up DPF, EGR valve or cooler, or a sooted turbo. Worse on coaches that idle a lot or only take short trips. Derate with a DEF quality or DEF level warning (2010+): a failed DEF sensor, heater or doser. Overheating on climbs: a pusher’s rear radiator packed with dirt, or a weak fan clutch. 5.9 only, hard starting and low power: lift pump or injection pump failure. WHAT WESTCO DOES Emissions system diagnosis and repair, radiator and cooling system cleaning and repair, fuel filters and water separator, and valve adjustment. CUMMINS DIESEL REPAIR → DIESEL · CUMMINS ISC 8.3 / ISL 8.9 / L9 What goes wrong with the Cummins ISC, ISL and L9 in a motorhome? These are the engines in mid-to-large diesel pushers. The one to know about is the ISL’s EGR cooler, which can fail and push coolant into the exhaust. FOUND IN Freightliner XC/XCS, Spartan and Roadmaster pushers. The ISC 8.3 ran through about 2006, the ISL 8.9 from about 2007 to 2016, and the L9 from 2017. Changeover years vary by coach builder. WHAT OWNERS NOTICE, AND WHY Coolant loss, white smoke or coolant out the exhaust (ISL): EGR cooler failure, often started by a clogged oil cooler. Left alone, it can damage the turbo and soak the DPF. Ticking or exhaust smell (8.3): a cracked exhaust manifold or broken bolts. Hard start or stumble (ISC): air getting into the fuel system through a failing lift pump. Coolant problems that eat the cylinder sleeves: neglected coolant chemistry. These engines need their coolant tested, not just topped off. WHAT WESTCO DOES EGR and oil cooler diagnosis and repair, coolant testing and service, fuel system work and emissions system repair. DIESEL · CUMMINS ISX / X15 Do you work on the Cummins ISX and X15 in large coaches? Yes. The big Cummins engines are found in high-end diesel pushers, and they share the smaller Cummins engines’ weak points: the EGR cooler and the emissions system. FOUND IN High-end Spartan and Freightliner pushers. ISX from the early 2000s, ISX15 from 2010, X15 from about 2016. WHAT OWNERS NOTICE, AND WHY Losing coolant with no visible leak: the EGR cooler. Derate and regen faults: DPF and DEF parts. DEF heads are reported to fail from heat in coach engine bays. Power loss: the turbo actuator. WHAT WESTCO DOES EGR system diagnosis, DPF and DEF repair, turbo diagnosis, and DEF system checks before storage. DIESEL · CAT 3126 / C7 What goes wrong with the CAT C7 and 3126 in an RV? The C7 and the 3126 before it were popular mid-size pusher engines. Caterpillar stopped making on-highway engines after 2009, so every one is at least 15 years old. The most common complaint is hard starting. FOUND IN Freightliner XC and Spartan mid-size pushers. The 3126 ran through about 2003, the C7 from about 2003 to 2009. WHAT OWNERS NOTICE, AND WHY Hard start when cold, or a no-start: these engines use engine oil pressure to fire the injectors. A worn high-pressure oil pump, leaking seals or old oil can leave too little pressure to start. Oil leaks at the back of the engine: high-pressure oil pump seals and lines. Misfire or smoke: injector O-rings or solenoids. Overheating on long climbs: commonly reported on the C7. WHAT WESTCO DOES High-pressure oil system diagnosis and repair, injector work, cooling system repair, and starting and charging system service. Colorado Springs: hard cold starts matter here. Oil condition, batteries and the intake heater decide whether it fires on a cold morning. DIESEL · CAT C9 / C13 / C15 Do you work on the CAT C9, C13 and C15 in diesel pushers? Yes. The larger Caterpillar engines powered mid and high-end pushers until 2009. Parts support is shrinking, so good diagnosis matters even more. FOUND IN Spartan, Freightliner and similar pushers, about 2004–2009. WHAT OWNERS NOTICE, AND WHY Hard start (C9): the same high-pressure oil system issues as the C7. Loss of power or high exhaust temperatures (C13/C15): the twin-turbo and air system. Loss of boost: a leaking charge air cooler. Regen faults (2007+): CAT’s regeneration system and the DPF. WHAT WESTCO DOES Air and turbo system diagnosis, charge air cooler testing, DPF and regeneration repair, and cooling system work. DIESEL · MERCEDES SPRINTER What goes wrong with the Mercedes Sprinter diesel in a motorhome? The Sprinter is the base for many Class B vans and small Class C motorhomes. The 3.0L V6 diesel is the most common, and its best-known problems are oil cooler leaks and limp mode. FOUND IN Sprinter vans and cab-chassis. The 3.0L V6 ran from 2007 to 2022, the 2.1L 4-cylinder in some later years, and the 2.0L 4-cylinder from 2023. WHAT OWNERS NOTICE, AND WHY Oil in the valley between the cylinder heads: oil cooler seals. Limp mode: an EGR valve, the intake swirl flap motor, the turbo actuator, or a split intercooler hose. Black, tar-like buildup around an injector: a leaking injector seal, often called “black death.” Fix it early. A start countdown on the dash (2010+): a DEF heater or sensor failure, more common in cold weather. WHAT WESTCO DOES Oil cooler seal repair, limp-mode diagnosis, injector seal repair, DEF system repair, and module programming with our factory-level programming tool. We also service Sprinters that aren’t RVs. MERCEDES SERVICE → DIESEL · FORD F-450 / F-550 SUPER C Do you work on Ford Power Stroke Super C motorhomes? Yes. Super C motorhomes on the Ford F-450/F-550 chassis use the Power Stroke diesel we work on every week. Earlier units have the 6.0L or 6.4L, and 2011 and newer units the 6.7L. WHAT OWNERS NOTICE, AND WHY No-start with metal in the fuel system (6.7L): high-pressure fuel pump failure, often set off by water or bad fuel. Coolant loss: EGR cooler or radiator leaks. Derate and regen faults: the DPF, DEF heater and NOx sensors. WHAT WESTCO DOES Full Power Stroke diagnosis and repair on every generation. POWER STROKE REPAIR → DIESEL · INTERNATIONAL VT365 / MAXXFORCE 7 Do you work on International VT365 and MaxxForce 7 engines in RVs? Yes. These are the International engines Ford sold as the 6.0L and 6.4L Power Stroke. They’re found in E-Series diesel Class C motorhomes and some Super C motorhomes on International chassis. FOUND IN E-Series diesel cutaways from 2004 to 2010 (VT365 / 6.0L). The MaxxForce 7 is found in Super C coaches on International chassis from about 2008. Navistar stopped making MaxxForce engines in 2016. WHAT OWNERS NOTICE, AND WHY Coolant loss or white smoke: head gaskets or the EGR cooler. Stalling or hard start (VT365): a failing injector control module (FICM). Oil level rising (MaxxForce 7): fuel getting into the oil from regens. WHAT WESTCO DOES Head gasket, EGR cooler, oil cooler and FICM repair, and coolant system service. DIESEL · BEFORE STORAGE AND BEFORE A TRIP What should diesel RV owners check before storage or a big trip? Most diesel RV trouble we see starts with a coach that sat. Three things to know: WHAT OWNERS NOTICE, AND WHY DEF goes bad. It freezes at 12°F and keeps about two years, less in heat. Old DEF can trigger a derate, so top off with fresh DEF before a trip. Coaches that sit don’t regen. Low-mile diesels that only take short trips build up soot. A long highway run helps, and a check before the season helps more. Rear radiators pack up with dirt. Pushers pull road dirt straight into the radiator. Have it cleaned before the summer climbs. WHAT WESTCO DOES A pre-season check of DEF, regen health, cooling and batteries before the first long climb. Every Audi has its own weak spots. This is what we see most in our bays. A4 & A5 2009–2016 · 2.0T • Oil consumption on some 2009–2011 engines • Timing chain tensioner — cold-start rattle • Water pump and thermostat housing leaks • Carbon buildup on intake valves A4 & A5 2017 and newer • Water pump and coolant leaks • S tronic service due every 35,000–45,000 miles A3 2008–2013 • Timing chain tensioner on the 2.0T • Water pump leaks • S tronic service overdue on used cars Q5 2009–2017 • Oil consumption on early 2.0T engines • Timing chain tensioner, 2009–2012 • Clogged sunroof drains — water inside • Water pump and thermostat housing leaks A6 & A7 2012–2018 · 3.0T • Water pump and thermostat leaks • Supercharger intercooler leaks • Carbon buildup on intake valves Q7 2007–2015 • Air suspension — sits low overnight • Coolant leaks on the 3.0T • Carbon buildup on direct-injection engines A8 & A6 Allroad Air suspension models • Leaking struts, weak compressors, valve block faults • Control arm bushings — highway vibration and clunks Keep it healthy What we tell Audi owners • 5,000-mile synthetic oil changes • Timing chain check on older 2.0T engines • Carbon cleaning when symptoms start • S tronic service on schedule Audi questions we answer every week Straight answers from our techs Why is my Audi 2.0T or 3.0T leaking coolant? Most Audi coolant leaks come from plastic cooling parts — the water pump housing, thermostat housing and coolant pipes — that go brittle and crack after years of heat cycling. On some 3.0T supercharged engines the intercooler cores leak too. Warning signs Low coolant light · Sweet smell after a drive · Pink or purple puddles · Running hotter than normal What we do We pressure-test the cooling system to find the exact leak, then fix the source — not just top it off. Colorado Springs: Freezing nights and warm afternoons are hard on plastic cooling parts. Don't drive an Audi that's losing coolant — overheating can warp the head. How often do Audi brake pads and rotors need replacing? On most Audis, front pads last about 25,000–40,000 miles and rear pads 35,000–60,000. Rotors usually last 50,000–70,000+ miles, and Audi rotors are replaced, not resurfaced. Warning signs Squealing · Grinding · Wheel shake when braking · Brake warning light What we do We inspect pads, rotors, calipers, hardware and fluid, and use OEM or high-quality equivalent parts. Brake fluid should be flushed about every two years. Colorado Springs: Mountain grades and stop-and-go traffic wear brakes faster — especially on heavier Quattro models. Why is my Audi air suspension not working? Audi air suspension fails as the struts, compressor and valve block wear — most often on the Q7 (2007–2015), A6 Allroad and A8. A leaking strut drops a corner, and a weak compressor can't keep up. Warning signs One corner low overnight · Sitting uneven · Suspension light · Compressor always running What we do We pressure-test the system and scan the leveling sensors, then replace only the part that's failing. Fix it early — a leaking strut burns out the compressor too. Why is my Audi Q5 sunroof leaking water? A leaking Q5 sunroof is almost always clogged drain tubes, not bad glass. When the drains block, water backs up into the headliner and cabin. Warning signs Wet carpet after rain · Dripping headliner · Musty smell · Damp footwells What we do We flow-test and clear the drains, check the routing for damage, and check whether water has reached modules or wiring. What is the Audi S tronic (DSG) service interval? Most Audi S tronic transmissions need fluid and filter service about every 35,000–45,000 miles. Skipping it is a common cause of rough shifting and mechatronic failure. Signs it's overdue Rough or delayed shifts · Hesitation · Jerking at low speed · Transmission light What we do Audi-spec fluid and filters, then the adaptation and reset procedures so it shifts smoothly. Colorado Springs: Mostly town driving? Service toward the early end of the range. Why does my Audi vibrate at highway speeds? Highway vibration on an Audi is usually worn control arm bushings, wheel balance, a bent wheel or alignment. If it shakes mainly when braking, it's the rotors. It typically shows up between 55 and 70 mph. Common causes Control arm bushings · Wheel balance · Bent wheel · Alignment · Ball joints or tie rods What we do We check steering, suspension, wheels, tires and brakes to find the real cause, so you don't pay for parts that won't fix it. What is carbon cleaning (walnut blasting) for Audi engines? Walnut blasting removes hard carbon from the intake valves of direct-injection engines like the 2.0T and 3.0T. Fuel never washes those valves, so oil vapor bakes on until it restricts airflow. Warning signs Rough idle · Cold-start misfires · Lost power · Worse fuel economy What we do Many Audis show symptoms between 60,000 and 100,000 miles. We inspect first and clean only when carbon is actually affecting how it runs. Fuel additives can't reach these valves. When should Audi timing chains and tensioners be replaced? On many late-2000s and early-2010s Audi 2.0T engines the original tensioner can fail, letting the chain skip and damage the engine. Have it inspected around 80,000–100,000 miles, or right away if it rattles on startup. Warning signs Cold-start rattle · Rough startup · Cam correlation codes · Long cranking What we do We tell you whether your engine has the original or updated tensioner. If it needs it, we replace the chain, tensioner and guides as one job. Why is my Audi 2.0T burning oil? Some late-2000s to mid-2010s Audi 2.0T engines burn oil because the piston rings wear or stick with carbon and stop sealing. Not sure what's wrong with your Audi? Every Cadillac has its own weak spots. This is what we see most in our bays. Escalade V8 models • AFM lifter failure • Adaptive shocks • Torque converter shudder SRX / CTS 2008–2012 · 3.6L V6 • Timing chain stretch • Cam timing codes DTS / DeVille / STS Northstar V8 • Head gasket failures • Oil leaks CTS / ATS / XTS / SRX 2013–2017 • CUE touchscreen delaminating or unresponsive Keep it healthy What we tell Cadillac owners • Change oil on time on the 3.6L V6 • Don't ignore a lifter tick • Watch coolant on a Northstar • Fix suspension faults early Cadillac questions we answer every week Straight answers from our techs Why is my Cadillac showing a cam timing code? On 2008–2012 SRXs and CTSs with the 3.6L V6, timing chain stretch triggers cam timing codes. Warning signs Check engine light · Cam timing codes · Rough running What we do We confirm chain stretch and replace the chains, guides and tensioners together. Why is my Northstar losing coolant? Cadillac's Northstar V8 is known for head gasket failures, often from head bolt threads pulling out of the block. Warning signs Coolant loss · Overheating · White smoke What we do We test for combustion gases and explain the repair options honestly before any work. Why is my Escalade ticking? Many GM V8s use AFM, and its lifters can fail — causing a tick and misfire. Warning signs Ticking · Misfire · Check engine light What we do We repair the lifters and can do the permanent fix: non-AFM hardware plus a PCM recalibration. Why doesn't my Cadillac CUE screen respond? On many 2013–2017 Cadillacs, the CUE touchscreen delaminates and stops responding or 'touches' itself. Warning signs Screen unresponsive · Ghost touches · Cracked look What we do We replace the touchscreen layer instead of the whole unit when possible. Why is my Cadillac ride rough or leaning? Adaptive (magnetic ride) shocks and air suspension on many Cadillacs leak or fail with age. Warning signs Suspension warning · Rough ride · Leaking shocks What we do We diagnose the system and replace the failed shocks or parts. Not sure what's wrong with your Cadillac?
